Personal Report Personal Report The first thing to consider when handling the design project is to think about the areas that will enhance creativity (Pile, 2009). Additionally, the kind of spaces that people prefer and what is lacking in such spaces must also be taken into consideration. An assessment of various sources has made it possible to formulate various questions that will be useful in the research. Among the questions that are important include: what needs to be accomplish in the research; why the research is important; the values that are critical to the conduct of research; the contribution of the research to the field and to the society; the value of the research to the researcher; and how the research will be perceived. In carrying out the design project, design methods have been sought that can be relevant throughout the design process. This implies gathering the necessary design literatures. When it comes to online search for design literatures, the key word for the search will be ‘design method’ even though this is expected to generate general results, some not related with the design subject being handled. Both secondary and primary sources will be used in the process so as to develop a concrete project that fully satisfies the vision and mission of the project. Given the magnitude of the project, stakeholder involvement in the setting the mission and vision is very critical (Clarke, 2008). As such, a meeting with key stakeholders will be necessary. Additionally, a diverse team will be assembled which will be instrumental in implementing the vision and mission of the project. Further, scenarios of user experience will be explored; the target group defined in terms of gender, age and income range, where they live, their culture and their general preferences. Even as the project will be ongoing, more literatures will be assessed to further enhance creativity and expand the scope of ideas in terms of design. Given the nature of the project, strategic thinking will be of critical importance in ensuring that critical business assumptions are not missed (Gordon et al., 1998). It will also enable better conception of ways of managing the project. Establishing a strategic story would add value to the project and create a measure of uniqueness that will distinguish the project from the rest. Reading the book “The Business Model Canvas”, some vital questions regarding the personal project have emerged. Using the building blocks mentioned above, systematic strategic plan that is highly likely to result in the successful execution of the project has been developed. In each part of the project, the concept has been analyzed, ideas that can help improve the design value compared and implications of the plan for stakeholders and the target market considered. According to McNiff and Whitehead (2011), it is important to consider a specific definition of the project, their current progress, perceptible challenges and available options to mitigate such challenges. At the same time, it enables practitioners establish their own practice theories from which others can benefit. In order to increase the probability of a creative future; people need to be aware of the present and work towards its improvement. One of the ways through which people can achieve the objective is to ensure that they are aware of the social consequences of their actions to them and others and work on ensuring that it is positive (Manktelow, 1994). Research thinking The future significantly influences a designer’s job description (Osterwalder and Pigneur, 2010). When the project was begun, focus had to be shifted from personal preferences to designing the product according to the consumers’ preferences. An interaction with classmates has been conducted in a bid to establish the type of living spaces they desire and utilize the research to improve on time and skills. One of the respondents asked what type of designer the researcher aspired to become, generating conviction to practice interior designing professionally. The respondent also enquired about the steps the researcher is taking to achieve the goal, to which the researcher explained historical research on the topic and the design strategy to incorporate cultural, technological and innovative elements into the work. In order to ensure that the researcher’s career objectives were achievable upon culmination of the project, he singled out six concerns that needed to be addressed. The most important aspects of the project were the development of design thinking, skills and creation of a unique design. To achieve the goals, a study of interior design history is necessary for a comprehensive understanding of the topic. The project’s emotional value stems from the fact that the researcher often misses his family. Most international students could relate to this emotional perspective thus creating a middle ground between the target and the researcher. There is therefore the need to create a living space with interior design elements that incorporate traditional characteristics of people living in them, for a personalized touch. The space will incorporate elegance, warmth, comfort and customized elements that make the space feel like the clients’ home away from home. Design Method The idea of strategic stories has highlighted the need to focus on profitability, product development and market share. The different models motivate idea generation and create a sense of direction for the design. When you can locate yourself in the story, your sense of commitment and involvement is enhanced. A designer should always be intuitive and analytical and view things from every possible angle. Such angles include users, experts, trends, technological potential, learning from parallel market, and market data. Business model generation would motivate me to think of value propositions, customer relationships and revenue streams. From the building blocks mentioned there are specific details to describe the design process and help have better analysis on the project. While conducting the personal project, it was discovered that concentrating on the design plan improved analytical skills, improved perception of the design and improved the overall chances of career success. Therefore a substantial amount of time was used in conducting research on the project and analyzing concerns that arose during the research process. Some of the concerns that arose because of applying action research included identification of what was being done, areas that required improvement and appropriate methods of improvement. To address the concerns, research was undertaken on the history of interior design thus achieving understanding on its basic elements. Secondly, the insight from the historical research was applied to establish how technology can improve and sustain the decorative elements of interior design. This enabled understanding of requirements that would enable justification of the perspective adopted, improve design skill and create a practical and organized strategic plan. Project Introduction Background and rationale As the Interior design of the 20th century developed at the beginning of Victorian era, the designers emphasized on creating spaces that are comfortable, rich and formal. A case in point is the Art Nouveau which was indebted to the Arts and Crafts and was characterized by its flowing line, simplicity in furniture design, and rejection of academic models. Artists and designers shared an admiration for Japanese art which manifested itself in a ubiquitous asymmetry. The modern movement was inspired by the concepts of rationalization and standardization. New materials and building techniques were to be used in creating lighter, more specious and functional environments. The early modern designers hoped to change society for the better through the creation of healthier and more liberal designs for all. The Art Deco style and the modern style were inspired by the classical concepts which mostly utilized smooth surfaces to envelop the three-dimensional form (McNiff and Whitehead, 2011). The interiors were characterized by the mixing and matching of various diverse patterns. High arts and mass cultural now developed into one intermingled area. A common feature of the Post-Modern era was an increase in the prosperity of certain social sectors, particularly of the young professional middle classes, which led to a return to traditionalism and the revival of past styles in Britain and America. The bold experimentation of the 1960s was superseded by a period of retrenchment and revivalism. Design Concept The goal is to create the restaurant interior space for international students located in the UK. The objectives include organization of different visuals and cultural cues, sustainability, and incorporation of historical practices in interior design decoration. The cultural decoration elements chosen are Chinese, Indian, Japanese, and Britain. For the designing, interior design history will be drawn upon to know what was considered artistic in the past time, and how this can be used to create new artistic forms based on history. At the same time, the intention is to design the space for international students. Therefore, by referring to the history of interior design and incorporating some of the most outstanding ones, it is hoped that it will bring good memory to students. As an interior design student, the design will be used to influence others by capturing each country’s history on the design and how the interior decoration developed. Most people assume classical interior design is easy to create. This is true to some extent. However, the cultural interior designs were colorful. Through the design, the students will be shown the interior decoration in each country and how they developed over time apart from introducing a sense of humor to the designs. Figure 0: Natural Elements Natural plants have been chosen for the theme since the cultural is the same as the natural: they exist in the world everywhere. Cultures develop through time and influence the international environments. For example, during the research, it was discovered that decorative elements are diverse and are versatile in nature as correctly observed by Massey (2001). For instance, British interior design exhibits influences from Spain, Russia and Italy, and so on. The natural also affect life every time by making life colorful. Therefore, natural plants will be used to design the portfolio, make the reader feel fresh, warm and comfortable. When designing the floor plan, a classical feeling will be created in this space for each country. Therefore, the private space has been divided with the opening space. The opening space design will make people feel modern, funny and comfortable. The private space will make people feel classical, and include different themes in each one. Different flooring has been used in each part because in order to use patterns to make each space feel special. Moreover, for the furniture different types have been chosen where people can come into the restaurant and feel free to choose which part they would like to sit in. For instance, the Chinese wallpaper will be incorporated with Britain decoration. For the Japanese elements, Japanese sakura will be used in background to express the Japanese character, and the Japanese traditional window form to simplify designs. The Indian design always make person’s feel fantasy. Therefore, the Indian traditional window shape and traditional texture have been used to express the Indian interiors character. All these elements have contact with Britain traditional decoration. At the same time, they combine historic designs and modern design, make the interior space feel comfortable, rich, and home like. Secondly, the interior space will have some dynamism, create a lighter, functional environment, while striking a good balance between the private with open area. Thirdly, sustainable materials will be used to create the healthier type of the interior space. Reflection As mentioned, the proposed project will incorporate various elements of cultures derived from the East and west together with different design epochs to create an exciting design. The proposed design will thus have a cultural blend set within a context of both classical and modern art forms to establish a space that international students can feel not only comfortable but also relaxed.
