Music Concert Report

Music is a very compelling art form, and I think it is one of the oldest in human history. Since time immemorial, music has played a number of major roles, ranging from entertainment, preservation of culture, and expression of ideas. It is an enthralling experience to see one’s favorite band or artists perform. As I have just started learning about music, I went to two music concert events to fulfill the task of completing this music concert report.

However, the interesting thing about my selection was that there was nothing between both the musical concert events I witnessed. The former was Maximus Musicus Visits the Orchestra. It was conducted at the Metropolitan Recreational Orchestra (MRO) on 4 July 2019. A month later, I came to know that an important concert was there. Its name was ‘‘Harder Than This’’. The Musicus concert was more appropriate for an audience that enjoyed the fun and had limited knowledge of the musical instruments. I noticed during the program that a notable number of parents and children were trying to enact some musical actions.

It looked more like an early lesson in orchestra for a beginner that was filled with fun and entertainment. In contrast, the latter, ‘Harder Than This’, was found to have a more serious and dark setting. The difference was really noticed in the crowd, where the people were mainly families with children in the former and youth and middle age categories for the latter.

In the former musical concert named Maximus Musicus Visits the Orchestra, there was really a lot for children to enjoy. What touched my heart as the striking feature of the musical concert was the style in which Leila Hamid Sheriff introduced the story. I was really taken away by the way she narrated the story, and the same was true about the other children present there. Her ability in storytelling had a great role in making the event successful. With the help of excellent gestures and expressions, she narrated the story of Maximus the mouse in a very interesting manner.

Therefore, as I turned around, it was interesting to see that children, who made a major portion of the audience, were fully immersed in the story, and I was no exception. In short, the story revolves around a mouse named Maximus or Maxi in short. The mouse, on a winter night, is out in search of safe shelter to spend the night. Finally, Maximus creeps into a huge building and falls asleep. Soon, he wakes up as there is loud sound from musical instruments and realizes that he has found shelter in a concert hall.

Then he explores various pieces of musical equipment when the orchestra prepares for the event. The concert was really exciting, and they performed a total of seven items in the concert Musicus. Out of them, the first one was Abduction from The Seraglio of Mozart. Some other noteworthy performances were the classic Fifth Symphony of Beethoven and Rossini’s Finale.

I had enjoyed many such events in my childhood. I still have faded memories of attending the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra with my family many times as a child, which we discontinued later on. At that time, for me, everything was a surprise, a huge crowd of people, very large venues, loud noise of various instruments, and so on. In fact, I found everything stunning and dream-like, including the hall and the population in my childhood. However, at present, the picture now looked considerably different.

The concert hall looked notably smaller than I had believed since my childhood. However, inside the hall, there was great enthusiasm in the air with parents and children, who made a major portion of visitors engaged in exciting talks. There was eagerness visible in the eyes and words of the children who could not control their excitement. Unlike the Metropolitan Recreational Orchestra (MRO), where there were rules regarding what people could wear, this concert event had none.

While people were not allowed to be in casual attire in the earlier event, it is noticed that people were given the freedom to wear according to their wishes in the new concert. They generally wore casual dresses and looked vibrant. On seeing the performers on the concert stage, the talks quickly subsided, and I noticed that everyone voluntarily stopped talking to facilitate others’ enjoyment as well as to avoid distracting the musicians. They were found following the color code of brown in which they looked stunning.

In sharp contradiction, ‘Harder Than This’ was staged for a more important cause and had a group of mature audience to attend. The musical looked exceptional, for it dealt with major social issues, namely depression. Instead of looking like a pseudo-event, it made the audience think about their own personal lives because the performers were real victims of depression, and they described their own life stories through their program. The effect was that the performance looked really personal and real.

As the performers went in-depth about the suicidal tendency and the way such minds crave for a vent to express their own emotions, I gained a new insight into the way depression inflicts one’s mind and how art can help them vent out their emotions and realize the sinister ideas in their mind. Thus, unlike the former musical that was light and fun, the latter event left the audience deep in thought as the subject continued haunting them for long.

Besides, I learned how important it is to offer support to the people who face the issue of depression to save them from suicide. I was impressed to see that groups like Befrienders KL decided to support the musical as they believed this program had the power to make the public more interested in and concerned about the subject of despondency.

I was at such a concert first in my life, but the overall experience was unforgettable. Unlike the large Metropolitan Recreational Orchestra, the hall was rather small, but it obviously had an advantage that I managed to have the opportunity to sit in the first row and have a close view of the performance.

Thus, it provided immense personal satisfaction than it could be possible for a large hall. Obviously, the place was decorated to suit the event and its subject. Like the former event, there was no restriction on what they wore for the program. In the event, the performers put on different attires to suit different scenes.

Thus, these two events altered my attitude towards an art form for good. I noticed how deep and wide is the reach of music and how essential its role is in society. For example, the two programs I attended influence the viewers in two notably different ways. Maximus Musicus Visits the Orchestra was fun, excitement, and pure music education. It gave me knowledge on various music instruments, the way symphony orchestra is held, and some of the most popular compositions of all time.

What still sticks to my mind is the way Maximus the mouse entertains the audience. In contrast, in the case of ‘Harder Than This’, what influenced me was the significance of the subject it dealt with, like depression and suicide, and the boldness exhibited by the performers by focusing on their own lives.

The program made the audience think about the ways music can play socially important roles and how innovative and powerful such experiments can be. I had never imagined that I would be witnessing real-life experiences in the form of music performances to such a depth and impact. Collectively, the two concert events helped to improve my musical knowledge considerably and enabled me to consider music from a wider angle.
