Global youth culture Globalization has led to increasingly closely linked countries that are interdependent making it appear as a global village. Globalization has led to the spread of ideas and culture that before were isolated to certain regions and groups. This spread of ideas and culture has given rise to the rise of global culture. Global culture references a culture that is accessible to individuals and groups all over the globe and exists across cultural boundaries. It can be argued that the existence of this global culture is most attainable among the youth who are actively engaged on globalized platforms of media and particularly social media made available through the Internet (Kahn & Kellner, 2009).

Richard Kahn and Douglass Kellner define global youth culture as the study of culture shared among the youth globally and a culture that is largely spread through media technology. Kahn and Kellner postulate that the group that constitutes the most media and technologically literate sector of most societies is the youth. The existence of a global youth culture can be diagnosed to the idea that the youth may share certain common cultural factors with other youth across the globe that is not similar to the rest of their national culture.

Multinational corporations that trade in global media commodities such as television, film, the internet, popular music, and ICT technology actively target the youth, thus, helping permeate global youth culture (Kahn & Kellner, 2009). Transnational or multinational corporations refer to organizations that operate in more than one country and have also assisted in the spread of global youth culture. Transnational corporations such as Mcdonalds, CNN, Louis Vuitton, MTV, Facebook, Instagram, Google, and Twitter enable the spread of global youth culture.

These corporations provide a platform for which the youth can help identify and respond to such as cultural icons, ideas, songs, or jokes. These transnational corporations provide for a uniform ground and uniform commodities which the youth across the global divide can consume and share uniformly through media. The same can also be said of youths from Cincinnati who may identify with other sports teams and sporting heroes that may come from other regions.

Through platforms provided by ICT technology, youths from Cincinnati can learn and follow their ideas and tastes. Cincinnati also hosts ‘taste of Cincinnati’, which represents the longest culinary arts festival in the US. This event is held annually in Downtown Cincinnati and attracts crowds of approximately 500,000 annually. The event showcases culinary delicacies from fine restaurants within the city while also highlighting local music talent. Through the event, the city gets to share its food culture with visitors from other regions of the country and the globe and may impact on their food preferences.
