Creative writing Name Institution Task 1 Australia’s federation day 1st January 1901 is the day that everybody celebrated me. It was a day like no other day where people from all walks of life, not only from Australia, had been waiting for me with much expectation. There was something special about me that made everyone to value me, everybody was talking about me and saying of how a great day it was to celebrate Australia as a federation. I could not help but feel like a treasure so scarce that everybody was seeking after me. It was the day that Australia would celebrate its inauguration as the new Commonwealth Australia. This would mean that I would be celebrated each year as part of the history of the continent. I must confess that I felt so honoured that all people had left everything just to celebrate me and make me part of history. Everything was perfect on that day. People had made me so colourful and the smiles and the joy they felt made me the best day of their lives. After such a long struggle for freedom, finally I was here to signify the transition to their freedom. All the states in the continent which were colonies at the time had come together to be united as one. There were flags being hoisted everywhere, colourful flags, to signify the new beginning of the union of all the states. The other national symbols and the coat of arms could be seen raised high as the people celebrated a new birth for Australia. It was the day that everybody was expecting to be perfect. Indeed perfect I was. Everybody had gone to all extents to make me perfect. From the decorations in the streets and the large crowds of people that had come to witness the events that were happening on me to the great expenses incurred by the government and foreign states to make the day memorable. The sight of motorcades on the streets carrying important dignitaries announced how much important I was. I was the day that history books would have to record and every Australian had to remember for as long as they lived. I would be celebrated by people in generations to come with high regard for the events that were celebrated on me. Speeches were given by prominent people portraying admiration for what they had accomplished. The most conspicuous thing about almost all the speeches was the emphasis put on how great an event I was and how many people had struggled and made sacrifices to make me a reality. I felt so good to be held with such high regard and admiration. People feasted and celebrated together as a way to mark me. Every detail was important to ensure that I was as expected. Agreements were signed that made me a permanent part of the history of Australia. Even though I knew that the day would come to an end, I knew that I would be celebrated with great importance for many generations to come. Task 2 My father I do not know how he looked like or how he was when he was young but I know who he is in his adult life. I get strength and motivation in knowing that I can count on his support and his presence in my life. I may be an adult but to him I still am that little child who was scared to be alone in the dark. As a child his presence was always an assurance of security. I knew nothing would go wrong while he was around. The way he used to hold me, even when I was worried the most, always gave me an assurance that all would be well. As I grew older he was there to teach me the importance of school. In fact he would take my hand and walk me to school. He would remind me of how important it was that I give school my all. I trusted him and I still trust him today. Though age may be catching up with him, he still remains a trusted advisor. He still remains a great father. His concern for his children has been his strength over the years. He would guide us every step of the way and be the source of hope for us even when everything was crumbling down. As he sits on his favourite couch one can see that not even age could take away his passion and concern for his family. In his speech are words of wisdom. Words that if followed would never lead you astray. His character is one that always speaks volumes on how to live an accomplished life. His smile even with age is one that reminds you of the beauty of life that has a supportive family by your side. Even with all his accomplishments and victories in life he still remains humble and approachable. In his words you get meaning for life and encouraged. I can still remember the times that he would gather us as children and emphasize on the need to do good. He would speak against bad habits and character and his words were enough to make us desire to be better. His words are an encouragement and an opportunity for change to us as a family. His love and commitment to his family can be seen in his way of life. There are, however, times that he would get angry because of our mischief. At that time he would be quick to indicate how disappointed he was and would back those words with other harsh words. His facial expression in times when he was agitated was enough to cause one to apologise and promise to do better next time. For some reason even without him speaking one would know when something was wrong. Though growing older by the day, he still remains a great father. He is a person one can look up to and a source of joy to those around him. Task 3 Admission to the university I was overjoyed on the day I received a letter confirming that I had been accepted at one of the universities in the country. I could not help but be proud at what I had accomplished after the great struggles in my education life. I knew that for sure my efforts had been rewarded and now I could join campus and choose to do something of interest to me. I was not so sure of the course that I had chosen but I knew that once I got to the university I would figure out exactly what to do. I had heard rumours of how life in the university is demanding with assignments and exams that needed one to research widely. However I also knew that life in the university would be enjoyable with a little bit more freedom. I was not exactly sure of what would happen once I got there but I knew that nothing would go wrong. I expected everything to be perfect. I however feared having to sit in lectures where the lecturers utter things that are not understandable to me. I always knew that life in the university involved a higher level of education where things would be a little bit more difficult. However, I encouraged myself knowing that with effort and determination, I would end up just fine. On the reporting day I woke up early enough, though I do not remember sleeping that much, to prepare for the big day. This was the beginning of life as an adult and I knew that everybody expected me to be more responsible in all I did. I knew I had to leave my childish ways behind and become a responsible person. My life was in my hands, or so I was told by my caring parents. No need to worry, I said to myself. I will still make myself and my family proud even in my life in the university. Once we were at the university I could not help but notice the great number of students who had come from distant lands just to get an education. I actually felt challenged and at that moment I could see myself so committed and determined to do well. I always tried to distance myself from fear because I felt it took away my chance of freedom. I always looked for a way to assure myself that all would be well. Admission began and within some few hours I was through and sitting on my bed in my room trying to adjust to my new life. I knew it would be difficult to live away from home especially because I would miss mum’s cooking. I however knew that this was my chance to become the man i always wished to be. I knew I could not accomplish all that while still at home. Everything had to change and accommodate my new life as a university student. I was ready to get started, Task 4 The tall tree Form a great distance away one could see the tall tree so raised in to the sky. One would think that its aim was to pierce the sky. Its branches and numerous leaves were a source of beauty for the surrounding area. No one could ignore the beauty of the tree which was so conscious especially because of the numerous green leaves. The tree was big and majestic such that one could have built a house on it and yet it would still remain as tall and beautiful as ever. People came from all walks of life to see this tree. It was located next to a river and its roots had spread so wide that it was difficult to know their end. In fact no other tree could grow near it as it had spread its roots so wide and its leaves and branches so high that it would have hidden the sun from the other trees. The shade provided by three was a relief in times of scorching sun. The tree provided such a cool environment that one would even forget of their miseries while enjoying the tree’s shade. The tree was home to different species of birds. One could see the numerous nests on the tree and the sound and sight of the birds would make the tree even more beautiful. It did not matter the type of bird, they all found a home on the tree. There was great room for all. The height of the tree provided a safe habitat for the birds as no one would dare climb the tree to the top. The sight of the tree was by itself breath-taking and would be carried away just by looking at it. It was impossible to imagine the existence of such a tree in this age where trees were being hunted for timber. Even with looming danger of tree harvesters, the tree stood unperturbed and seemed to have the assurance of its survival. This actually seemed to be true considering how old the tree was. Everybody knew that the tree was there to stay. Under the tree meetings would be held, religious meetings would be conducted and couples found it a wonderful place to exchange their vows. Everything seemed okay around the tree. It was a place of solace for all, whether troubled or not. Even in darkness one would appreciate the majestic nature of the tree. Those living near the tree had an opportunity to enjoy the view every day. They would enjoy the cold breeze as the wind was blowing on the tree and the fresh air provided by the tree. One could assume that the tree added life to everything around it. The grass was green, the bushes green and beautiful. Even the people living around the tree looked healthier. The animals were attracted to the tree and could be seen around the tree both during the day and in the night. Under the tree there was no harm whether to the animals, birds or human beings. It was all peaceful. References Dawson, P. (2001). Creative writing in Australia: The development of a discipline. TEXT: Journal of the Australian Association of Writing Programs, 5(1).
