Extract of sample "Pigments Forms as an Important Component of Paint"

Pigments forms an important component of paint. It does the specific function of giving color to paint. Pigment is among the four essential components of paint. It joins the rest of the factors to provide color. Second, pigment is responsible for opacity. Opacity is the hiding power of a paint substance. Black and white charts are useful in measuring the property of paints. The hiding power, the better the quality of a paint. There several types of pigment depending on the type of finish required in the paint.

There are synthetic pigments that are developed through manufacturing processes (Neddo, 60). The inorganic pigments are formed through mixing of two slightly colored or colorless substances in order to form a highly colored substance. For industrial functions, pigments are used to give color as well as protecting the underlying part. Objective of the experimentSynthesis of an inorganic pigment by the use of Iron (III) Chloride and Potassium Ferrocyanide How several types of paints, water-based, and oil-based paints perform on different substrates?

Determining of qualities of a good paint. Synthesis of a pigment Procedure Put Iron (III) Chloride (3.7g) in a beaker. Add 5ml of water into the beaker.Stir the solution until it forms a saturated solution.Put Potassium Ferrocyanide (1.4g) in a separate beaker.Add 5ml of water to the beaker.Stir the solution until it is saturated.Mix the two solutions4FeCl3 + 3K4(Fe(CN)6) = Fe4(Fe(CN)6) + 12KClThe solution is poured in the Buchner funnel for filtering allow the solution to filter for about 10 minutes Making the paintGrind the pigment until it forms a fine grain.

With the use of three differenteyeglassess, put 1.104 grams in each to mix with each binder mainly egg, glue, or linseed. The three components aacttas he resin which acts as the vehicle in a paint apart from providing adhesion.Actual resins are mainly formed from polymerization processes to form alkyds. Mix and disperse with a spatula. Testing of the paint There are various parameters used to test the quality of a good paint. The parameters include opacity, shade achievement, viscosity, and gloss among others (Neddo, 61).

For this case, testing is specific to the pigment. Therefore, the most important parameters include gloss, opacity, and strength of the color.Use brush to apply the paint on a paper.Stroke different paints onto a clean eye brush by the use of a wet brush.Next is to stroke the different paints onto aluminum foil using a wet brush. The factors to be observed in the experiment include the time taken for the paint to dry, adhesion, bleeding, texture, and the number of strokes needed for solid consistency.

The results revealed that metallic and glass surfaces require paints with high adhesion to produce successful results. Glue had the best properties of a binder (Neddo, 61). The percent yield was 51%. The experiment revealed compatibility of the pigment in different paints.
