Preparation of Non-Medicated Toothpaste - Lab Report Example

Methodology:
Ingredients:
-Calcium phosphate 45g
-Sorbitol 70% Solution 10ml
-Sodium Lauryl sulfate 1.2g
-Sodium Carboxymethylcellulose 600mg
-Sodium Saccharin 100mg
-Peppermint Oil 1ml
-Purified Water 10ml
1) Weight out each of the above ingredients
2) Add the sodium lauryl sulfate, sodium saccharin, and peppermint oil to the purified water.
3) Add the sodium Carboxymethylcellulose to the Sorbitol solution.
4) Mix the two preparation in a beaker until it is uniform.
5) Using a geometric dilution incorporate the calcium phosphate to form a paste
6) Use the ointment mill to obtain a smooth paste (to remove grittiness) and clean the ointment mill after you’re done.
7) Using a spatula scoop the paste into the toothpaste starting from the bottom with the cap off.
8) Fold the tube twice at the bottom and seal the tube with the crimper.

Results and discussion
The product produced is easy to handle and easy to apply due to the use of peppermint oil. The peppermint also improves its flavor. As provided by the ingredients we can see that calcium carbonate is the major ingredient with the heaviest weight (Field). As discussed above the ingredient is responsible for protection against tooth decay, dental caries, and other forms of tooth infections. Re-mineralization is a basic concern in the preparation of any toothpaste since it helps in fighting dental carries a common disease worldwide. Calcium and phosphate are also important since they are able to alter the cariogenic potential of dental plaque biofilm.
