Extract of sample "Chemistry: Principles and Reactions"

NaCl (aq) + AgNO3 (aq) NaNO3 (aq) + AgCl (s)Na+ (aq) + Cl- (aq) + Ag+ (aq) + NO3- (aq) NaNO3 (aq) + AgCl (s)Ag+ (aq) + Cl- (aq) AgCl (s)Procedure Two beakers labeled CuSO4 (aq) and Ca(NO3)2 (aq), and six test-tubes labeled A, A1, A2 & B, B1, B2 using stickers were used.

Weights of A & B recorded. Part I: CuSO4 and Ca (NO3)3 reacted. Accurately 50 ml of an aqueous solution of 0.5M of CuSO4 in one beaker and 50 ml of an aqueous solution of 0.3M of Ca(NO3)2 in another beaker were prepared. In test-tube A, put 2ml of CuSO4 & 4ml of Ca(NO3)2. In test-tube B, put 4ml of CuSO4 & 2ml of Ca(NO3)2. Shake the test tubes gently. Allow about 5 minutes of reaction. Record your observations. Part II: Solids separated. The contents of test tubes A & B were centrifuged to obtain the solids.

Half of the supernatants from A & B were transferred to A1, A2, and B2, B2 respectively. The precipitates in A & B were washed using 4ml of ethanol, and centrifuged for 5 minutes; the supernatant was removed carefully using a pipette, discarded and the precipitates were left to dry. Part III: Supernatants in A2, A2, B1, and B2 tested. 2ml of CuSO4 were added in A1 & B1 and 2ml of Ca(NO3)2 added in A2 & B2. The observations were recorded in each case and the contents of A1, A2, B1, and B2 were discarded. Part IV: Precipitates weighed.

The precipitates in A & B were weighed and their masses were recorded. The contents of A & B were then discarded.

Reflections on Connection of Chemistry to Franciscan Values

There widely exists, for instance, an extensive research on chemical substances and methods by which to reverse spontaneous reactions and defy aging thereafter yet the main underlying objective has been to improve the quality of commerce and trade for further acquisition of profits by prominent industries.... Without the necessary transformation, it would occur difficult for a Franciscan to realize the significance of other associated core values especially as they, in the similar manner, apply to the approach of refining student character and making one adequately capable of handling academic and professional tasks as in the scientific endeavour of exploring studies within the realm of chemistry....
