Introduction
Today, organizations continue to struggle when it comes to identification of the global, efficient leaders. Additionally, these organizations are the same ones that are not helpful to the global leaders when it comes to acquisition of competencies that are necessary in the succession of facing higher rates of globalization (Gundling, Hogan & Cvitkovich, 2011, p.120). It is in my opinion that Voegtlin, Patzer and Scherer’s (2012) study of responsible leadership in global businesses is no doubt interesting and an informative part of research. My argument will be developed through the authors’ research and what they view as the problem when it comes to global leadership.
Summary
The authors’ report draws on some of the deliberative practices that global leaders undertake. The authors discuss, how the concept of these practices in relation to the existing research which is in leadership. In particular, this research is based on the authors’ proposal of a new model that they state is likely to address the problems that arise from globalization. Voegtlin, Patzer and Scherer justify that there are positive outcomes that arise when there are responsible leaders across all levels of organizational analysis. The research offers readers with the with opportunity to identify the ideas that are behind conducting responsible leadership on a global level.
Claims Made in the Article
First Claim
One particular claim made by authors in regard to responsible leadership is that the ethical aspects in leadership have remained a topic of study that is underdeveloped. The authors reference this to the recent research that has been conducted in regard to leadership ethics, where the focus has diverted in different facets. The authors’ view that leadership ethics has remained as an underdeveloped field because of the conceptual constraints; where there are no implications outlined of the leadership challenges that are present during the research.
Second Claim
The second claim that the others make regarding responsible leadership is that there is a model which makes provisions for empirical testing in future. The model is based on the normative conception of responsibility in leadership. According to Voegtlin, Patzer and Scherer (2012, p.3) this newly proposed model of leadership is likely to address the problems of globalization, as it offers organization or leaders with the research opportunities.
Third Claim
The third claim and the key claim made by the authors is that if there is general global leadership responsibility, the problems of globalization which affect most organizations, are likely to be identified fast and addressed promptly. Voegtlin, Patzer and Scherer (2012, p.3) view that globalization is slowly becoming an increased incorporation of value creation and as a result, impacts negatively on a nation’s capability of developing.
Aim of the Research
The authors of the research aim at developing an understanding in regard to leadership, that when viewed from a normative perspective, the leader may be enabled to act in a moral sense. This is possible, when the leader is guided in the organization when it comes to accepting the general values that arise with the onset of the making dialogue with the affected state (Shaw, 2010, p 299). As Shaw states, morality and personal values are a part and puzzle of a leader adopting ethics and moral code when handling an organization (2010, p. 193).
The authors also aim at developing an understanding from an instrumental point of view. From this perspective, a license may be granted to promote the operations or add wealth of an organization. Lastly, the aim of the research is to identify if leadership can be operationalized so as to enable for there to exist a descriptive step or the access to the idea behind responsible leadership.
Problems with the Claims Made
In the first claim made by the authors, the idea behind the claim is that ethical leadership is today a topic of discussion which is undeveloped. As noted the main reason they give for this research is that leadership challenges are not outlined for most organization to thereby, pose as some of the conceptual constraints. According to Henn (2009, p.153) problems in leadership can result into stifled creativity and lead to an organization with reduced productivity to appoint that such an organization no longer is feasible. Voegtlin, Patzer and Scherer’s claim gives one the impression that the authors may only be giving their view based on what they may have seen in one business or organization. Contrary to the opinion of ethical leadership, there is a current emerging body of research which proposes that not all global organizations have been faced with problem of ethical leadership. According to Gundling, Hogan & Cvitkovich (2011, p.120) all it takes to avoid such problems is to ensure that they follow certain principles of leadership when developing their leadership skills and talents. In my opinion, if leadership is to be developed, leaders have to focus and gain a balance between, their competencies, personality and behavior.
In the second claim regarding a model that is likely to address the problems of globalization, the authors have sufficient evidence to show how effective the model can be. The evidence is clearly pointed out when the authors assert that “We thereby propose positive outcomes” (2012, p.2). Hence, successful leadership in the global framework requires that all the outcomes that the authors provide to be satisfied.
In criticizing “servant leadership” (2012, p. 2) the authors do not offer numerous examples of evidence that points to the idea that there is a global understanding of leaders as servants. The authors cite Greenleaf (1997) along with Liden (2008) to emphasize about the servant leader, but it is unclear whether the authors of the article, consider Greenleaf and Liden as the only authors who share such perspectives.
The authors’ argument is no doubt interesting and at the same time challenging, given the fact that the authors give different articles and cite different authors to emphasize on the point that they want the readers to understand. In identifying their position in relation to responsible leadership, the authors go to lengths to provide the readers as aforementioned with the model that is likely to solve their problems in regard to responsible leadership. By providing various approaches to responsible leadership, the authors offer the readers with the evidence that supports some of their claims.
In conclusion, the authors have clearly attempted to offer the viewers their strategic insights on what can promote responsible leadership as a way of influencing some of the organizations in the world. The way in which the authors have executed their research shows that the reported results of their model are useful and applicable in the real life experiences of leaders.
