Introduction

Dunkin Donuts is a company that has a great track performance in terms of serves and product delivery. It is widely known and this has been as a result of good service district manager, swears that this great performance of the company should be kept at bar and this can only be brought about by good management and proper running of company operations. Management of employees plays a key role in the success of every business, and Dunkin Donuts is not exceptional. In that case, I consider proper management of daily activities, employee’s welfare, job selection and the human resource department the key factor for the success of the newly created branch of the company, of which I head. This branch in the next few operational days should have its own records that is considered the best among the other branches of the company. It worth noting that this branch is autonomous and therefore new management of employees is yet to be set up and this should be conducted in a manner that future problems associated to human resource management be curbed at this early age.

Therefore in this paper, we will analyze how the design of the job at Dunkin donuts will be conducted, organizational design, criteria of recruiting employees and selection process and finally training of employees and performance appraisal.

Job Design

Job design refers to the process of structuring work and designation of the specific work activities to be conducted by an individual employee of by a group in order to achieve the set objectives of the company. It is therefore important to consider this as the most important step in the new management set at the Dunkin Donuts Company. First, consideration of the culture and system control is important. It should be remembered well that the culture of this company is hard work to meet the set goals. In this case, the same spirit should be applied in order to meet the set targets of the group. All the programs and activities that aims at meeting the goals should be controlled to ensure that they are in line as planned (Karasek & Theorell, 1991).

Organization of work is another tools that should not be left behind. Every activities taking place should be done in a planned manner to avoid collision of duties. Wellbeing of every employee in the company should be considered important in order to motivate them to work harder. As the company have a great track record in its performance and it has its own set record, this group though autonomous should have a productive reflection where sour performance as a group should be above the limit that have been set by the company. Finally, our operation here should not be such blindly, but should be looking at the available opportunities in order to exploit and learn from them. Learning opportunities should be a tool to be employed. Job design for this group is then summarized in the diagram below.

Organizational Design

Organizational design plays an important role in the success of every company, Dunlin Donuts not exceptional. For an effective organization, there is a need to bring definition of objectives clearly to the employees, give proper prescription of ways that employees will conduct themselves and clearly state what is expected of every employee and do an evaluation of the real performance of every individual of every function to meet the set expectations. It is therefore important to consider open system of organizational set-up where everyone can contribute to the success of the company. Teamwork is a crucial tool for the success of this company and therefore, we should welcome any idea that can bring success to the company. Specialization is one of the greatest element in organizational design. This is where an employee majors in one sector that s/he can do best for the betterment of this company. This will result in improved productivity and improvement in the quality of products and services since the work is done by an expert. The diagram below illustrates organizational design (IE Business School, 2011).

Departmentalization is another design that is used. This involves setting up departments that deals with various issues within the company. This is important since workload will be distributed in order to ensure effective monitoring of activities in every level of production. It will lower the number of employees supervised in every department and this will give close monitoring of processes in the company.

Hierarchy of the organization also matters a lot in terms of operation. This constitutes the structure of an organization. It illustrates the flow of information in an organization. For Dunkin Donuts, the structure that will be used for effective management of operations at the district level is as shown below. It demonstrates who will work under who and who will be answerable to who (IE Business School, 2011).

Recruiting and Selection Criteria

This is the most important section in an organizational management. It involves procedures used to acquire employees in an organization. At Dunkin Donuts, this step should be considered a critical point as it acts as a turning point of the company, where if now well done, it will result in poor performance of the company. At this new branch of Dunkin Donuts Company and me being the general manager, the following procedure will be followed in recruitment and selection. First, job analysis will be done to ascertain the gap existing in production and there is a need to replace it. It can also be as a result of creation of a new job due to increased amount of work and this requires new skills. The second step is to analyze if such a missing skill can be gotten from within the company before advertising the job. This is beneficial since little training and orientation is required.

In case there is no internal person, there is a need to write an advertisement for the vacancy by giving out job description and its requirements. Advertisement can be made in the company website and in papers. The next step is selection panel. This is where managers of the new employee will as questions to those who had applied for the job to ascertain if they meet the requirements. Selection criteria is done basing on qualifications and the gap existing and the following diagram illustrates selection criteria (Sparrow & Hiltrop, 1995).

Successful candidate/s are then given appointment letters to report to the company and then introduce them to the employees in the company, give them orientation, placement, evaluation and the rewarding them. The diagram below illustrates recruiting and selection process at Dunkin Donuts district branch.

Training and Performance Appraisal

Training of employees is an important step as it makes hem familiarize themselves with the kind of work they will be subjected to. At Dunkin Donuts new branch, new employees will be trained by the managers of their departments. This is because they are the one who knows well what is done in such departments and how it should be done. Employees who have been successfully recruited will undergo a training for some time and this is considered important so that when they start working, there will be no interruptions in their respective areas of specialization. Old employees also should be trained by their departments on any new technology brought into the company. Any new idea should be introduced to the employees before start using it. This will ensure that abnormalities are avoided at all cost in production process. Heads of department are the one to organize on this.

Performance appraisal of employees should also be considered. Hardworking employees should be rewarded accordingly in order to motivate other work hard. A target is set for every employee which marks the working standard of the company, and whoever will work beyond that will be rewarded accordingly. This will motivate employees to work hard and this will achieve the set goals and objectives of the company (Edward E. Lawler III, 1994).

Conclusion

In conclusion, the success of Dunkin Donuts Company, District Brach which is under my management heavily lies on the effort inserted by every individual within my jurisdiction. Good management of activities, employees and processes will contribute a lot to the achievement of the set goals and objectives. Every employees should be guided by the company goals and objectives and this will make them have a sense of direction during operation. Finally, effective management involves putting the welfare of workers ahead, equipping the human resource department with the necessary tools and resources to allow them acquire the relevant employees to work in different departments. Departmental heads should also have relevant skill in monitoring employees working in their departments. With all these accomplished, Dunkin Donuts District Branch will hit the sky in its performance.
