Negotiation Simulation Trash Trouble As per the scenario, the World Banks office has expressed its view to consider and act upon the waste management problems in the nations in the Caribbean nations. The issue of waste management is majorly faced in the developing countries due to current enactments of international agreement including Protocol Concerning Pollution from Land-Based Sources and Activities. The World Bank in order to reduce the waste will assist in constructing modern landfills in nations wherein the commitments towards waste minimization is strongly needed. In order to construct landfills, St Ann requires around $15 to $25 million and thus it is vital for the stakeholder to negotiate on the matter of waste management problem, so that minimum standards of waste management are maintained. Stakeholder analysis is essential in order to come across with positive changes regarding the issue as financing the above mentioned amount is beyond the ability of St. Ann (1ICONS Project, 2014). a. Teamwork The cost associated with the development of new landfill is high for St. Ann to cope with the issues of waste management. In this regard, it is important for the stakeholders to come to an agreement in order to improve the waste management problem and subsequently, acquire assistance from the World Bank. The key stakeholders or the five roles with regard to the waste management issues are the Greater Elizabeth Business Association, the Municipal Government Coalition, The Forestville Homeowners League, the St. Ann Amerindian Nations Council and the National Government of St. Ann. It is important for the stakeholders to take effective measures regarding the issue with the intention of mitigating the problem concerning public health, environmental crisis and economic conditions. The participants or the stakeholders need to analyze as well as negotiate amid each other and lead to a plan regarding the infrastructure, technology and the landfills in order to minimize the concerned issue. The stakeholders of St. Ann play a pivotal role in reducing the waste and make the area environmentally clean. The two major stakeholders are The National Government of St. Ann and The Municipal Government Coalition who have the majority of the responsibilities than others. National Government of St. Ann is the representative of the government and is controlled by the Labor Party making it one of the powerful stakeholders in the waste management infrastructure. The stakeholder has a strong role and position in the government in order to mitigate the issue of waste minimization. In this context, it is worth mentioning that another key stakeholder with influential power and position is Municipal Government Coalition. They are the representatives of Elizabeth and Martinville with powerful leaders. They are influential and have the ability to fight for waste minimization but lack budgetary support. Therefore, the support from the World Bank and the strong position of the stakeholder is vital to assist in mitigating the issues causing negative impact (1ICONS Project, 2014). I am a representative of the Municipal Government Coalition, which is governed by the Liberal Party. The negotiation is regarding waste minimization with the assistance of civil organizations along with national government. As per the role sheet, the lower capital funding and budget deficit acts as drawback for the municipal government coalition. With regards to the Pre- Negotiation planning report, it is observed that the main goal of the stakeholder is reduce waste management by providing infrastructure and services. The goal of the stakeholder is to provide St. Ann with modern landfills having recycling facility. Moreover, the need of new incinerators is required by the nation in order to decompose the solid wastes. It is the goal of the team to construct incinerators for efficiency in the waste management infrastructure. The planning is to provide collection services to the people so that the dumping garbage near the beaches is reduced significantly. Furthermore, recycling program for increasing efficiency is another goal to be achieved in order to reuse the recyclable products and safeguard the environments (1ICONS Project, 2014). The main obstacle in achieving the goals is due to the lack of coordination amid the roles of several political parties such as liberal and labor. The conflict of opinion and the role and position of the partners are apart, which creates an obstacle in achieving the desired goals with ease. The general strategy in order to overcome the obstacle amid the partners is through regular meeting and building transparency in working procedures. The partners will be working as a collective team for the benefit of the nation and the economy for the overall development of the nations. Maintaining relationship and valuing the government parties as a team will help in the achievement of the goal. The use of the media and by reducing the political tension will assist in resolving the issues. All these strategies are the part of the debriefing in order to implement realistic approaches for St. Ann waste management issue at large (2ICONS Project, 2014). b. Individual Reflection I am a representative of the Municipal Government Coalition and I have learnt various aspects regarding problem solving approaches from the simulation. I have learnt that it is important to proceed as per the political scenario along with other stakeholders in order to achieve the goal at par. Creating awareness is vital for safeguarding the interest of the society with greater effectiveness. Moreover, coordination, support and strong intention to work are not enough, as the issues of waste management are required to be supported with financial considerations for better attainment of the goals. 2. Term Paper Negotiation is a problem solving tool, which is effective in resolving issues. It is a process, which is possible when there are common requirements but with different objectives. In other words, negotiation is a process wherein two or more parties come together to seek solution by coming to a common standpoint in relation to certain issues. It is a mutually agreed compromise by the parties for the effectiveness and accomplishment of the desired objectives (Churchman, 1995). Integrative negotiation is a process where the parties cooperate with each other in order to maximize the benefit and settle down issues by an act of agreement with required value. In order to ensure progress of the integrative negation, it is important for the parties to compromise on the basis of certain value, so that the negotiation created is claimed effectively (Luecke, 2003). a. Lessons Learnt Negotiation is a form of settlement wherein the parties involved come to common platform regarding certain issues keeping in mind the views of the parties. Managing negotiation is an important act and requires skills for ascertaining settlements with greater value. I have also experienced a scenario wherein I had to negotiate to get a better deal and apply a strategy of negotiation to mitigate the issues related to waste management. Problem Description. I assist my father in his business wherein he comes across various suppliers. As for instances, when I visited a supplier on behalf of my father in order to enter into a negotiation with the supplier for developing an effective deal. I want the supplier to provide me with high quality goods at a lower price than quoted. This scenario requires an agreement on the basis of negotiation for obtaining fair deals for the success of the business. Preparation/Strategy. I am a representative of the business and want the supplier to provide me goods within a period of 2 months. Neither, the supplier wants to provide discount nor will I want to leave my stand without creation of an understanding for long term relationship. This creation of value for both and coming to a settlement initiated the need for strategy. Agreement. After the applicability of the negotiation strategy, both the parties provided value to each other and came up with a common understanding with respect to negotiation. An integrative agreement was initiated, which was good for both the parties as value was provided to each party. Process. I was determined to place an order at a lower price and so was the supplier was keen to get the payment early. None of us wanted to lose each other, therefore we willingly disclosed few interests in order to come to a conclusion. The process of discussion supported the negotiation process. Conceptual Analysis. The negotiation was looking for creative options and did not focus on concessions. The negotiation must be in order to provide value for both by allowing the counterparts to achieve their goals. The negotiation I experienced offered win-win situation for both. With regard to the integrative negotiation, I implemented the Zone of Possible Agreement (ZOPA) concept. ZOPA reflects an agreement wherein the parties involved are satisfied for potential benefits (Luecke, 2003). Similarly, negotiation took place wherein one of my friends was involved and settlement was made based on mutual understanding. Learning. The negotiation in which I was a part I had a positive behavior and outlook wherein my focus was to create value. I was open for various innovative options, so that the best can be attained. Through the integrative negotiation, I was allowed to express my interest by sharing information for opportunities. I realized that to have a proper negotiation or agreement it is important to follow the concept of ZOPA, which will benefit and work for the interest of both the parties at large. I realized that I have a behavior to influence others by coming to a mutual point without harming others’ values. I have learnt that as a negotiator, people must be attentive and should value each other as well as provide options with innovative ideas. Take-Away. The integrative negotiation strategy was effective in offering benefits to both the parties involved and accordingly. I have come across the fact that integrative negotiation strategy is of immense importance to offer value and accordingly, follow the same strategy and concept while negotiating in future. The perception of the negotiator changes when implementing the ZOPA concept, as it is not about negotiating only for own benefit but also for the mutual benefit of the people involved. b. What Worked and Did Not Work As a part of the negotiation strategy, I realized that the understanding and openness amid the parties worked the best for us. The transparency maintained in the process of negotiation made the scenario and the transition smooth. The integrative negotiation and the behavior of both personnel worked properly. Negotiation acted as a tool or a process for the people to work accordingly. The only drawback faced was related to creating value by disclosing the interest of the parties. 3. Analyze the Dialogue between Wenamen and the Phoenician King a. What Elements of Fortitude from either the Phoenician King or Wenamen and Why Egypt has many adventurous stories regarding conquering and defending the territory. In the 11th century, Wenamen who was a priest of the Amen temple was send in Phoenician ship to help the king in the construction of the ship by purchasing timber. He acted as a messenger of the king and carried with him a letter and valuables that include golden vessel, silver jugs and eleven deben of silver in a purse (Grouping Reshafim, 2014). Although, he was attacked by pirates and was robbed, he did not give up but continued his journey with few leftover valuable coins. Wenamen expressed his strength even after being attacked by pirates. Moreover, his resilience and determination was proved, when he was asked to pay for the timber. The sea raiders were again trying to attack Wenamen again to disturb his journey back to Egypt. With strong determination and resilience, he was able to beat the raiders and escape back to Egypt. These elements of Wenamen express his fortitude through his journey (Grouping Reshafim, 2014). b. What are the Elements of Prudence? And Why? The element of prudence is evidential by the acts of Wenamen and through his far sightedness. He was given the task of a messenger to bring timber for the construction. During his journey, he faced different mishaps, which adversely affected his plan. His prudence can be determined by his act of protecting himself from the attack and find few deben and timber during his journey (Little, 2010). As stated “I went forth from Tyre at early dawn Zakar-Baal (TAkArA Bar), the prince of Byblos. The I found 30 deben of silver therein. I seized [it, [saying to them: "I will take(?)]] your money, and it shall remain with me until ye find [my money. [Was it not a man of Thekel (?)]] who stole it, and no thief [of ours (?)]? I will take it"” (Grouping Reshafim, 2014). The statement signified that Wenamen revealed courage in his journey, which assisted him to be successful in his journey. c. What are the Elements of Discernment / Good Judgment? And Why? Wenamen, the messenger was drove to the land of Alasa wherein he saw Heteb the Queen. He through his good judgment was able to identify the person who understood Egyptian and could translate his thoughts to the Queen. His discernment and sensitivity was evaluated by the fact that he addressed the Queen by stating that every corner of the world is full of injustice but the Alasa is the land of justice wherein he will be given justice. He addressed “Say to my mistress: I have heard as far as Thebes, the abode of Amon, that in every city injustice is done, but that justice is done in the land of Alasa; (but), lo, injustice is done every day here”(Grouping Reshafim, 2014). The statement signified his thought and judgment that he will not be killed by the Queen and will be protected. In addition, he has the faith that the Egyptian will continuously search him and attack the people who have harmed him. These words indicated the elements of discernment and good judgment. d. What are the Elements of Temperance? And Why? The elements of temperance were revealed at the time when Wenamen was arrested and he wept. Wenamen stated, “Surely thou seest these birds which twice descend upon Egypt. Behold them! They come to the pool, and how long shall I be here, forsaken? For thou seest surely those who come to arrest me again” (Grouping Reshafim, 2014). These words of Wenamen expressed his grievance and soberness. This statement shows his emotions and attitude when he was arrested. e. What is the Element of Transgenerational Negotiations? And Why? A Transgenerational negotiation is a method where negotiation is done without using words but through scalp tingling intensity. When Wenamen was arrested, he through his actions and high intensity of emotions negotiated for his life. Negotiator induced the Prince through his actions based on which Wenamen was freed from the land and send to Alasa. The negotiation was achieved and fruitful at the time when Wenamen sailed to other lands. As stated by the prince after he was convinced “I cannot arrest the messenger of Amon in my land. Let me send him away, and ye shall pursue him, to arrest him” (Grouping Reshafim, 2014). References Churchman, D. (1995). Negotiation: Process, tactics, theory. USA: University Press of America.
