Extract of sample "Selecting and Using Data Resources and Systems: Walmart"

This week’s learning has largely focused on available data resources, data processing, and storage systems and how these can be incorporated into any major business information system. This week’s learning will, therefore, become the building stone upon which the final project will be prepared. The week’s learning will influence the approach taken to selecting various data, processing, and storage resources for the selected organization. The week’s learning will also make it possible to have a basic understanding of all available data, processing, and storage resources so that selection of any of these will be based on a well-informed decision that is influenced by how well the selection can be used to generate the best of results for Wal-Mart.

While selecting and using data resources and systems, White, Oelke, and Friesen (2012) warned of the existence of possible challenges that may come on both a short-term and long-term basis. In the short term, issues that have to do with the training of human resources and finding issue space to contain systems may exist (Sabegh, Ali, and Motlagh, 2012). On a long-term basis also, issues of system security and the expansion of the system through the decentralization of the system may arise. In the short term, issues of training can be solved by giving the human resource pre-installation training. The issue of space can also be solved by merging offices whose works are related so that there can be enough space for the system. The long-term issues are highly technical and can be solved by outsourcing the services of the best IT experts on the market.

The system recommended for Wal-Mart is a customer relationship management system. As part of this system, the following resources will be required:

Data Resources: sales receipts, invoices, Names of customers, location of customers, the gender of customers, age of customers, purchasing history of customers, history of complaints by customers.
Data Processing: Customer service providers, nature of solution given to a customer’s problem, rating of customer service given, superiors who oversaw customer management issues, resources needed handling complaints of customers.
