My Personal Statement Like Elbert Hubbard once said: “Thoroughness characterizes all successful men. Genius is the art of taking infinite pains. All great achievement has been characterized by extreme care, infinite painstaking, even to the minutest detail.” I chose to apply similar qualities, mostly sparing nothing that qualifies as knowledge however, minute, in my quest to become great economist. I consider venturing into any activity that builds up my indispensable qualities as a business economist. The activities and qualities illustrated by this document manifest the degree of pursuance of my career. My exceptionally strong interest in Business directed my decision to major in it Economics. Born in a middle class family where my parents gathered a lot of effort to raise me up, I quickly inferred the need for finance from this experience. As the saying goes, necessity is the mother of invention, and for this reason got interested in economics. My father’s insufficient knowledge and skills in financial control were my earliest cues to pursue economics to professional level. He ran a small business of selling fashion clothes, food factory – selling deep-fried flour sticks and grilled potatoes. His investment performed poorly in the stock markets during the financial crisis (downturn). Then his investment failed totally not long thereafter. Key knowledge learnt here was about microeconomics and macroeconomics. I learnt how the limited knowledge on these fields impacted negatively on my father’s investments. It is obvious that during this period, small businesses would be affected adversely as compared to large businesses. Smaller economies suffered the most than bigger economies. To build on basic economics, I chose to work in Age as Insurance Agency where I was assigned various duties including, but not restricted to, sales management, proposal planning and writing, planning insurance products, which demanded fantastic deal of economic skills. I also worked as an Exhibition promoter at Adecco Company where I learnt the affects of culture on the buying patterns. This experience helped me develop strong communications skills. Earlier, I did my internship at the China Resource Vanguard Co. Ltd where I was charged with the duties of database building/ management and market research. Prior to internship, my volunteer ship at De Anza College at the Japanese Cultural Club (JCC) made me learn more about Japanese culture. At International Student Volunteer (ISV) counseling of senior students was part of my responsibilities. This helped in improving my interaction skills with people of various age divide. At the Red Cross, I helped with planting of trees in the green society project and packing food and other materials for the needy. At Concession Stand in Flea Market, De Ana College, as a volunteer, leadership and teamwork skills were acquired. At St. Joan of Arc Secondary School, as a volunteer, I taught the handicap to do easy jobs. This was also accompanied by teaching Basic English and Chinese to children from the underdeveloped countries. In addition, I counseled senior citizens about finance, housing and daily life. I have participated in several student organizations and activities. First, at De Anza College, I took part in the President of Japanese Cultural Club (JCC) with lots of interest. I learnt about Japanese culture, I was a member of track and field varsity for sports activities; a member of cross cultural partners (CCP) where I learnt about diverse cultures. This contributed immensely towards improving my communication skills. At St Joan of Arc Secondary School, (in Hong Kong) I was appointed chairman of biology club after I excelled in the public examination. In this position, I learnt how to be a manager. I did a lot of research work. I became a committee member of student guidance officer that helped to organize the student guidance team, I assigned work to different helpers, and I had to work out a schedule with my team mates. I got merit for the excellent work I did. I was the representative of class as the financial officer organized for rising of funds from class. I managed the budget for every events organized by class. Ever since I started my education, I have developed several personal qualities which have made me a well rounded individual who can fit in any society. These qualities are accompanied by talents, accomplishments, contributions or experiences. Some of the qualities I posses include, but not restricted to, high self esteem and confidence which have enabled me to be a good student at many occasion in my studentship life. This have enabled me participate in several social activities, since I am capable of interacting freely with people from different backgrounds and cultures. Because of this quality, I have been able to be a team player. Because of the high self-esteem, my eloquence has improved immensely resulting in improving my communication skills. Talent wise, I am considerably good sportsman. My passion for the game of hockey earned me the post of the general games captain. The special interest that I have in information and technology, have made me take part in several science congress and symposiums. These experiences made me learn more in the technology field. My contributions in these events made my school to be known in the entire science field at high school level as I was capable of going through to the final s of the event. With the love for environment; I was able to volunteer as an environmentalist with the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) for six months. Some of the accomplishments that can be attributed to my contribution include, but not limited to, winning a trophy by the hockey team, being the best student in science congress at the national level, as an intern with the most practical approach on environmental problem resolution issues at the UNEP. This was through an assessment done by departmental heads on the interns. These are just but a few to mention, achievements which make proud, completing the iUaLife summer camp which was organized by the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Being the first in S7 Computer Applications Examination, in the competitions held in 2008-2009 and 2009-2010, I was awarded the champion of soccer competition. Also, I obtained the prize of the champion in IT challenge organized by the Hong Kong Association for Computer Education (HKAE). These are just but a representation of my personality.
