Submitted by: XXXXXX Number: XXXXXX XXXXXXX XXXXXX XXXXXX of XXXXXXX XX –XX – 2010 Palm Inc. - Outputs Diagnosis, SLP Palm Inc. is a well known company and has been recognized for the handheld computers. The company has grown to become leaders in the internet enabled mobile phones which are also referred to as smart phones. Palm Inc has a wide range of products which include the pre and pixi wireless devices. The devices use the WebOS systems of Palm and the same is also used for the mobiles. WebOS is meant for phones which wirelessly access the web and are most useful to get the best from the touch screen phones. The Nadler – Tushman congruence model, “suggests that in order to fully understand an organisation’s performance, you must first understand the organization as a system that consists of some basic elements” (OliverWyman). The elements include the inputs which involve both internal as well as external sources. Also, the strategy that the company employs for the attainment of the vision, the outputs which include the products and services that this creates for the fulfillment of the strategic objectives and finally the transformation of the company. The model is very beneficial as it helps to specify the inputs and outputs within the organization. The model also makes the assumption that organizations are a system. The model highlights that organizations draw inputs from the internal and external sources. This model is helpful to understand the inputs, transformation process and its impact on the firms output. Considering the outputs of Palm Inc. these can be measured in terms of the products that the company provides and the level of its inputs. The company’s output can clearly be identified in terms of the revenue, net profit, shareholders value etc. In the Nadler-Tushman Outputs for Palm Inc. the output exists at individual, group and organizational levels. Following are the analysis of the outputs of Palm Inc at three different levels. Firstly dealing with the organization level output, this can clearly be identified from the products that are provided to the customers. Palm provides a wide range of products and types of services for its customers. The company has a number of different products like the WebOS and various other applications that deal with the mobile phones. The outputs of the company are clearly very effective and also help in attracting the customers and stakeholders to accomplish the goals and vision of the organization. The company’s main strength is the differentiation that the company has been able to achieve in the markets and the high choice of standard platforms that the company provides for the customers. All the products of the company are clearly built with great deal of research and focus. The company also focuses on the needs of the customers rather than simply blindly following the trends in the markets. On the whole, the company’s main strengths revolve around its outputs and the fact that the company has been able to efficiently and effectively provide the customers with excellent overall services and products. On an organizational level Palm Inc has been able to develop a major name and recognition. The company’s performance can clearly be measured in terms of the sales, revenues, stakeholders’ value, market share and the customer satisfaction. It is also crucial to note that the overall revenues of the company do provide a clear insight into the performance of the organization. Here considering the sudden dip in the overall revenue of the company depicts a significant impact on the overall organizational level output. With the decrease in the finances and the major dip that the company has been faced with, it is evident that the organizational level outputs are not quite effective to accomplish customers requirement. The decrease in the net income and revenue also depicts a declining market share and also shows that the company is being faced with a downfall as compared to the competitors. The next level deals with the group level output. Here the group in the organization can be identified by the analysis of the organizational structure. In the case of Palm Inc, the company has a strong and functional organizational structure and all the employees are responsible for the implementation of strategies within the business (Palm Inc.). The functional organizational structure facilitates functional groups, which are beneficial for the success of the business. It is due to the functional groups cause an increase in the specialization among the group members, which enhance the operational effectiveness of them. The group communication in the organization is also effective, which causes an increase in the operational effectiveness of the business. The group output includes effective decision making and also ensures the optimal utilization of resources. Also in terms of the group communication it is essential to note that this leads to reduction of the conflicts and issues within the company and also helps in motivating the group members to a great extent. With a higher level of motivation, there will clearly be an increase in terms of the overall performance of the employees as well, which causes an increase in the business operation effectiveness. It is also important to note that with an increase in the finance, advertising and marketing aspects of the organization also fall into the group level outputs. Here an increase in these factors help in increasing the productivity of the employees and also help in reducing the group conflicts is some of the important measures, which are used to measure the performance of group level outputs (Palm). Finally in terms of the individual level output, the company is majorly dependent on the key personnel and the suppliers. Here is important to realize that individuals play a major role in the business and the success of the business. Hence making any changes to the role of the individuals can also have a major impact on the overall operations of the company. The business success is depended on the efforts of president and CEO of the company as well as on the members of management team. The employees of the organization also contribute to provide the individual outputs to ensure the business success.   It is also important to note that the individual level efforts also have a major contribution to the overall working of the company and with an increase in the output of the individuals; there can clearly be a major increase in terms of the output of the firm as well. This can easily be measured in terms of the employee turnover rate, and also the levels of employee satisfaction and productivity. In conclusion, in terms f the outputs of the company, it can clearly be noted that the company has a lower level of output as compared to other companies within the industry. Also the overall group level output and the individual level also have significant impact on the overall working of the company. In conclusion it is also necessary to note that the individual, group and system level outputs have a major impact on each other and contribute to the growth of the company together.
