Research is generally of two types – qualitative or quantitative and most researchers are confused which is the best method of research. According to Rips (2001), arguments can be evaluated in two qualitatively different ways – in terms of their deductive correctness or in terms of inductive strength. Arguments have different roles and purposes.  Arguments can range from virtually worthless ones to ones against which no doubts can be ranged. Hence arguments should be evaluated based on the purpose in mind.

An argument is deductively correct if its conclusion is true, whatever may be the premises; an argument is inductively strong if its premises support its conclusion. This research can either be quantitative (deductive) or qualitative (inductive). The qualitative approach focuses on words and observations to describe people or situations.

The quantitative approach, on the other hand, emphasizes numbers that represent opinions or concepts. Both the methods have their own advantages and disadvantages and hence the selection of the methodology is difficult. For some studied both the methods may have to be combined. 2.2 Research Design As Amaratunga et al suggests research should be chosen as a function of the research situation, for the purpose of this study only qualitative study will suffice. Quantitative data is numerical in form (Jones, 2004) and hence not necessary for this study.

Qualitative data provides greater depth as it covers a range of material collected from previous research, literature review, case studies, and unstructured interviews. This means data is collected after prolonged contact with the field of study (Knox, 2004). It is important to understand the difference between the two most used method of research so that the researcher can take an informed and the right decision.
