Rather, it takes the form of food from Muslim cultures, particularly the crescent of countries stretching from Morocco in North Africa to Indonesia and Malaysia in Southeast Asia. This means Halal food can be everything from Moroccan tagines, Turkish kofte and Lebanese mezze, to Persian kebabs, Pakistani biryanis, and Malaysian nasi goreng. We will reduce inequalities in health between different parts of the city, between different groups of people and between Leeds and the rest of the country. (http://www.leedsinitiative.org/healthy/default.aspx) Healthy Workplaces, a subgroup of Healthy Leeds, is a multi-sector partnership working with small and medium businesses in Leeds to promote health and wellbeing at work and reduce work-related ill health. Improving health and safety in the workplace is an objective of the Health and Wellbeing Plan, under Priority 2; Protect people's health, support people to stay health and promote equal chances of good health. The workplace also provides a useful setting for addressing a range of public health topics within the Health and Wellbeing Plan, e.g. stopping smoking and raising levels of physical activity as well as health and safety outcomes such as fewer workplace accidents. Why promote health and wellbeing in the workplace? Millions of pounds are lost every year due to ill health within the workplace and this has a substantial impact on the Leeds economy. Dame Carol Black, National Director for Work and Health, recently published a review into health at work, Working for a Healthier Tomorrow, which found that ill health was costing the country £100 billion a year – enough to run the entire NHS. Furthermore, in 2004, the University of York calculated that work-related ill health costs Leeds at least £50 million annually. In terms of outcomes for employers, improving health and wellbeing in the workplace can bring about many associated benefits, including fewer absences, better retention and more productive, happier employees. http://www.leedsinitiative.org/healthy/page.aspx?id=4832 Leeds has a variety of state of art gyms and swimming pools for the residents.
