Organisational culture is like the blood flow in the human system that connects and energises the various internal organs. Changes made in the systems/subsystems may not be effective until they are compatible with the organisational culture. Otherwise, cultural resistance will defeat the purpose of any planned change. In this Case Study, Macquarie Bank was initially focused on merchant /investment banking, but since the 1980s this bank diversified further and shifted towards value-added niches (market segments) like corporate services, bullion and commodities.

Similarly, the process of diversification further entered into a range of retail domestic banking property and leasing etc. In order to help the organisational changes to go through these stages smoothly and speedily, several factors play their parts. These include both external and internal roles. The six main factors are :1. Corporate Management: Corporate Management includes chief executives who are involved in policy decisions. The role of the corporate management is to energise the slackening pace and interest by taking up problems for discussions and by showing the concern’s growth.2. The Consultant: A consultant or a team of consultants usually comes from outside, but they can also be insiders.

The consultants’ role is that of experts who have both knowledge and experience in the field in which a particular change or changes are proposed. The internal persons, even though they may have the necessary expertise are likely to be inhibited because they have their own perceptions of the problems.3. The Counterpart: Even if the expert is from outside, some people from the organisation work with him. These people possess the same expertise as the consultant has. The counterpart helps in implementing the policies and details of the organisational changes and in stabilising these in the organisation.
