My Major in Management Introduction A component of business that I am studying and will impact on my career is my major in management. Management is concerned with coordination of people and other resources in order to accomplish the organizational objectives and goals using available resource in an effective and efficient manner. I am majoring in management and my preferred career path is human resource management. I am aware that management is concerned with planning, organizing, staffing, directing and controlling the activities of the organization in order to attain the pre-determined goals in an efficient and effective manner (Mathias and Jackson 12). I believe this component of business will be useful in my career since it will enable me forecast the human resource requirements of the organization and understand how to design the organizational structure depending on the reporting relationships and need for coordination of various related jobs (Griffin 23). This component will enable me become more proactive in my future career and understand how to accurately forecast the human talent demands of the organization. In this case, I will be capable of projecting the likelihood of increase in demand of the products through various management models and plan in advance in order to ensure the organization has the right mix of skills to cater for the future needs (Mathias and Jackson 45) Management will be essential in designing well defined jobs that will ensure task and job clarification. I will be capable of ensuring that the job design caters for the education, skills and other attributes that are essential for effective performance of the job and facilitates cooperation of the related jobs in order to facilitate the attainment of the overall organizational objectives (Griffin 34). As a human talent management professional, I will be tasked with recruitment and training of employees. I believe a major in management will enable me identify numerous recruitment sources and various training methods are suitable for the training needs of the employees. I will ensure the recruitment criteria is aligned with the specific job description and training methods aim at improving the output and productivity of all employees in the organization(Mathias and Jackson 135). This component of business will be essential in my career as a human resource manager since the directing function of managers is relevant in supervision, motivation and leadership of human resources in the organization. Management will introduce me to numerous leadership models and theories that are essential in articulating a shared vision for the company and influencing the efforts and attitudes of employees towards attainment of the shared goals of the organization. In this case, I will be capable of ensuring the job design caters for team-building and delegation of authority and responsibility to subordinates in order to ensure employees have challenging jobs. Management concepts such as motivation will enable me understand the factors that contribute to intrinsic motivation of the employees such as commendations for excellent job, flexible working hours, fairness in benefits administration and promotion opportunities (Mathias and Jackson 154). The controlling function of management is useful in my future career since it will be essential in establishment of the expected performance standards and performance evaluation. The controlling aspect of management will enable me identify the problems and situations that hinder the attainment of the expected individual employee performance outcomes such as low motivation and lack of adequate skills. Performance appraisals methods such as benchmarking and balanced scorecard are some of the management models that will be useful in evaluating the performance of individual employees and providing feedback to each employee (Mathias and Jackson 190). Another importance of my major in management in my career is the importance of change management in organizations. Management will enable to scan the external environment and understand the political, social, legal, cultural, economic, and technological changes that require change management in the company in order for the organization to align its operations, processes and human resource management practices with the changes in the external environment (Mathias and Jackson 78). For instance, I will be capable of understanding the impact of new technologies on the skills of employees and efficiency of the working processes. Accordingly, I will be able to understand the need for culturally-diverse workforce and the need to comply with new legislation on employment matters. This aspect of business is critical in ensuring employee attitudes and behaviors support the corporate values, norms and beliefs and aim at ensuring innovation and excellence in all aspects of the organization. Human resource managers play a critical role in addressing the factors that cause employee resistance to change such as fears of redundancy and lack of adequate skills thus management is essential in explaining the purpose of change in the company (Mathias and Jackson 158). The management component of business is essential in my future career since it considers various aspects of compensation and benefits administration. The study of management is essential in understanding the factors that influence the remuneration structure such as existing market conditions such as inflation, scarcity of skills and responsibility of each individual employee. In this case, I will be capable of combining both monetary and non-monetary benefits such as wages and salaries, bonuses, share-ownership schemes, medical schemes, free transport, wellness facilities, and award schemes (Mathias and Jackson 167). Accordingly, knowledge of management is essential in creating incentive plans that aim at improving employee loyalty and commitment to the organization through extra-benefits such as end-of-the year cash bonuses and paid vacations. Management will enable me in creating a favorable working environment that ensures work-life balance and caters for employee wellness. In this case, this component of business will allow me understand the factors that contribute to burnout and work-related stress such as inappropriate job roles and inefficient communication channels in the company. Accordingly, I will be capable of providing wellness facilities such as gyms, on-site counseling services and flexible working hours so as to improve the job satisfaction and productivity of all employees. In addition, I am aware it is the duty of the human resource managers to provide good working conditions through ensuring the surrounding environment is safe, clean and healthy in order to minimize work-related accidents (Griffin 223). Management will be useful in negotiating collective bargaining agreements and solving employment-related disputes. Management skills such as negotiation skills and conflict resolutions skills will be essential in avoiding industrial actions and ensuring that employee unions work with the organization in signing collective bargaining agreements and dispute resolution procedures that will ensure smooth flow of operations within the organization (Mathias and Jackson 312). Conclusion Management will be very useful in my career as a human resource manager since it will enable understand the impact of the external business environment on the human resource requirements of the organization. The study will improve my knowledge on job design and how to ensure the job description and job specification is suitable for the position in the organization. Management is concerned with organizing and this will allow me ensure that the organizational structure, communication channels, span of control and reporting relationships supports the attainment of the organizational goals. The study of management will enable me appreciate how leadership approaches, motivation and performance evaluation contribute to job satisfaction and high performance of the individual employees. Management is also essential in benefits administration, ensuring a healthy working environment and negotiating collective bargaining agreements in order to avoid employment-related disputes and promote meaningful relationships with labor unions.
