Challenges faced by the company in the late 1990s In the late 90s, there was a major increase in customer demand. And retailer chains that offered major discounts and good consumer service, resulted in a major growth in the retail market of up to 80%.

Newell was also under immense pressure to upgrade its technology to keep up with retailer chains. Another major challenge was the acquisition of the Rubbermaid and Calphalon companies. Newell’s distinctive resources Newell’s most distinctive resource is its human resource management. Its leaders confine crucial strategic information within its managerial levels, which it uses to observe and deal with competitors. Newell’s successful corporate-level strategy of selling low-cost products to the major retail outlets at a low-profit margin is a solid strategy that has never failed through time and time.

This strategy sounds more appealing to both investors and consumers and is one of Newell’s major corporate strategiesAcquisition of Calphalon and/or RubbermaidNewell wanted to sell specialty and department store goods, which they were able to do after they acquired Calphalon and Rubbermaid making the venture relevant and strategic.
