The organisation began its operations in 1937 under the leadership of its founder Kiichiro Toyoda. He founded it as a subsidiary of his father’s company Toyota Industries to manufacture automobiles. Before the establishment of the company, while still being only a department of Toyota Industries, Toyota produced Type A engine in 1934 and its first passenger car Toyota AA two years later. Currently the organisation manufacturers and distributes vehicles under five brands including Toyota, Hino, Lexus, Ranz, and Scion.

The company also owns 51.2% shares of Daihatsu, 16.66% of Fuji Heavy Industries, 5.9% of Isuzu, and a 0.27% of Tesla (Mega Cars, Toyota, n.d.). Toyota Motor Corporation operates under Toyota Group, which is one of the prominent conglomerates in the world.Currently the organisation has presence in all countries around the globe with 333,498 employees. Takeshi Uchiyamada is the chairman of the company and Akio Toyoda is the President and Chief Executive Officer of Toyota. The firm gives particular importance to corporate governance polices in order to maintain stakeholder trust in the company and to prevent operational irregularities.

In order to make its business management practices transparent and ethical, Toyota declared the appointment of outside board members in July 2013. The company has been listed on the New York Stock Exchange and London Stock Exchange. The organisation has been active in its home country since 1949 and globally since 1999.
