According to Joseph Grenny, the person being interviewed by Diane Brady of Business Week, and also one of the authors of the book Influencer: The Power to Change Anything, it is not easy to influence behavior and not everyone has the talent, knowledge or the ability to be influencers. Even managers who are expected to influence the behavior of their subordinates do not always have effective skills to be influencers.

In one’s personal perspective, I strongly believe that it is not easy to influence behavior due to diverse factors that need to be considered and incorporated in motivating and influencing people to achieve defined goals. 2. How can managers influence the behavior of individuals and teams? As noted, managers can influence the behavior of individuals and teams by focusing on the hearts and minds, as starting points. Also, Grenny suggested that harnessing peer pressure would be an effective way of influencing the behavior of individuals and teams.

This means “locating opinion leaders throughout the organization, convincing them of what needs to change, and getting them to commit. Once the opinion leaders are on board, others generally come along” (McShane: Video Case, 2012, par. 3). 3. Why do individuals resist change? How can they be influenced to embrace change? Individuals resist change because of two reasons: they cannot change or they see no good would be generated from changing. Therefore, to embrace change, as suggested by Grenny, not only should influencers motivate them to change; but also, influencers must develop their abilities and skills to change.
