Writing Answer to the Question Self Fulfilling and Self Sealing Theory: Many a time, what we think or vouch, by coincidence, appears to betrue. It is called as ‘Self Fulfilling’ which was coroneted as ‘Prophesy’ in earlier era. The myths of yesteryears, defying the geographical boundary, had stood for this theory. The mythology of different civilization bears the testimonies of the self fulfilling prophesy. In fact, our own action many a time makes this theory come true. For example, an average student, discouraged from every corner, ends up with a firm belief that he can never do well in examination. Eventually, his grade slides and he keeps on losing faith, resulting much more decay in his career. (1) On the other hand, “Self Sealing” as a theory leads to the cherished mental set that clings with a particular belief or taboo. Prevailing in orthodox religious group or in different cults this theory prevents the believer to act normally as he gets paranoid in respect to the outside world order. The hideous crime done by some Jihad groups in terms of culpable loss of human life and resources shows us how a person under the grip of severe self sealing doctrine can mow down innocent lives. (1) Answer to the Question -2 The Concepts of “Power Visible” and “Power Invisible” There are three level of power including Power Visible, Power Hidden and Power Invisible.”Power Visible” pertains to the power that determines the policy of a community or political power which includes the structural formation, the authoritative powers and the rules and regulations. This power has the ability of decision making and decision making. The true reflection of democratic norms can be observed in this form of power. In fact, this power is “trying to change the ‘who, how and what’ of policymaking so that the policy process is more democratic and accountable,” (2) “Power Invisible” generally relates to the power that is responsible for our collective psychological, social or corporate behavior. Each and every community or organization is being governed by some unwritten doctrine. There is no guide book or instruction; it is the convention that has to be followed. In fact, “this level of power shapes people’s beliefs, sense of self and acceptance of the status quo – even their own superiority or inferiority.” (2)All our norms, believes and taboos are generally governed by this segment of power. In fact, in organizational level, how to deal with the top brass has not been written any where, it is the common sense, which is being governed strongly by this definition of power that plays the crux of the role. Page 11, The Fifth Discipline Peter Senge(1990) has made an epoch making move with his book “The Fifth Discipline” where the basics of organizational behavior is being put under scanner, chiseled and a new theory has taken shape, namely, Systems Thinking. At first we should understand the term ‘System’ to understand and its implication in this aspect. A. Systems Thinking: To define, “System is a collection of parts that act and interact together to achieve some logical end”(3). In the same way, what is being applied to solve some problem in a system of yesteryear may cause more of a problem of today. If we take the example of plastic, or that of the pesticide which erodes the natural fauna, it will be clear. The advent of a problem surely demands a solution and that is to be evolved out. Here lies the scope of Systems Thinking which views World as a complex system which is interconnected. In fact, the cure lies within the system itself. B. System Thinking in the light of Self Sealing and Self Fulfilling Doctrines: A critical analysis of the entire gamut will reveal an amazingly simple report. Self Fulfilling, which once was related to Oracle, can be described with the critical analysis of the entire subsystem. A company will mint profit or not can definitely be said by analyzing not only Balance Sheets but from the attitudes of the employees, the competitive market scenario and so on. The positive forecasting can be done by analyzing the system itself. In the same way, in light of ‘Self Sealing’ perspective, Senge has cited the same in an impeccable manner-“‘I am my position. We are trained to be loyal to our jobs - so much so that we confuse them with our own identities.” The Fifth Discipline , (Page 19) (4). Since they have never taken the lessons of Systems Thinking, he will fail to analyze the situation in totality. For example, A Production Manager fails to understand the demand of sales people who are facing the stiff competition which demands so many changes in the new products. The synopsis is cocooned mentality of a position, where he is in no position to understand any other problem, a frank case of Self Sealing orientation which, in all aspects, damages the organization. C. System Thinking and Paradigms, Paranoia etc: Paradigms stand for the acceptance of a particular systems and orders that stands to be unalterable. If any outside influence can make any change in this aspect that is being termed as Paradigm Shift which appears to be a taboo in virtually all practical set up. In the same way, the Writing-5 cultist, paranoid theories are being evolved out of this mentality to maintain status co which some time leads to destructive activities. Again, System Thinking comes to foray of the entire happenings. D. Systems thinking and reasoning: Out of all these complexities, systems thinking here try to do what it is supposed to do. It tries to draw a proper corollary in between too many diversions through reasoning. System thinking is meant to test all premises by self referral logic that assures the trust, irons out differences and converge the thought process towards more productive and cumulative way. The emergence of a “Learning Organization” is the ultimate outcome of Systems Thinking as envisioned by Peter Senge. E. Learning Organizations: ”organizations where people continually expand their capacity to create the results they truly desire, where new and expansive patterns of thinking are nurtured, where collective aspiration is set free, and where people are continually learning to see the whole together.”(5) Are dubbed as learning organizations. Here each and every organizational part is trained to see the other side of the coin. As a result they are going to be pragmatic enough to kill all the “enemies within”. Resembling closely with TQM or Kaizen theories where each and every particulars are taken care of, so that the development can be holistic, the “learning Organization” goes to much higher strata. On the psychological point of view, the problems are being addressed and the terms which are already been discussed in a lucid manner. In fact, apart from the organization, if the same theory can be applied in our civil society, we can benefit ourselves to the fullest. The aberrations like Self Fulfilling Prophesy or the paranoid mentalities can be viewed in a more appropriate manner and the result will be eminent. To Conclude, all that we can say, our complex world can be more simple if we toil ourselves to be complex enough to understand the doctrines of Systems Thinking by heart. ***************** Writing-6 References 1.
