This shows the magnitude with which human trafficking is rife in Togo. These domestic workers are usually mistreated and viewed as less human. They are subject to beating by their employer, who play the role of their masters, are denied food and treated as outcasts. However, since they earn a salary, the government does not consider this a form human trafficking or slavery.

Just like in the case of farm laborers, denial of certain rights like freedom of choice and work for no pay would raise the situation into human trafficking status. Child laborers are rampant in Togo. These laborers are usually young teenagers who are mistakenly viewed as adults in most African setting. They are therefore expected to go out in the fields and earn a living. If the children are used as soldiers to fight in the civil wars, or denied education rights and forced to work without pay, a precedence of human trafficking emerges.
