In this pursuit, an organization therefore undertakes knowledge management through a system that best suits its operations. The process through which intellectual capital is harnessed and exploited is referred to as knowledge management. The underlying interest is to realize organizational competitive advantage and engage customers into a commitment that benefits the organization. Knowledge management systems therefore play a crucial role in the business pursuits of an organization. Designing and/or Evaluating a Knowledge Management (KM) System for an Organization Knowledge management systems vary across organizations.

This is due to the fact that they are formulated and implemented to serve specific purposes in the various organizations. Although the common underlying factor under knowledge management is to harness and exploit intellectual capital, different firms approach this kind of management differently, thus the variations in the systems employed from one organization to another. However, the implementation of a knowledge management system takes a rather common process, and therefore the considerations made in designing and/or evaluating a knowledge management (KM) system for an organization are similar across organizations (Denning, 2006b). . es what problems it faces in regard to knowledge management in order to lay a foundation that will enable the formulation, designing and implementation of a relevant knowledge system.

The evaluation of this criterion of knowledge management accounts for the performance of the already established system of knowledge management or aids the designing of one where such a system is not in place. The relationship between problem identification and the organization is that the business problem identified utilizes the organization’s workforce to provide a solution that leads to the realization of organizational goals and objectives. Knowledge management is therefore shaped by business goals and objectives (Halawi, McCarthy and Aronson, 2006).

Preparing for change Change is an important component of contemporary business strategies. The intellectual capital exploitation process is not only technology-based, but also encompasses other aspects of change like culture. Knowledge development is a process enhanced by education and training. Cultural change is characterized by diversifying perceptions and embracing dynamism in knowledge development. Since employees play a crucial role in designing and evaluating systems of knowledge management, it is important that these employees be culturally dynamic.

On the same note, the role played by the corporate management in endorsing knowledge management cannot be ignored. This means that the design and consequent implementation of knowledge management is integral to both internal and external environments in which the firm operates in. This criterion of knowledge management implementation shows that the employees, the organization and the corporate management complement each other in knowledge management pursuits.
