It can also be defined as a systematic study of the actions and the attitudes that every individual demonstrates within an organization. The aim of the study is to ensure that the human behavior contributes towards the development of the organization and along with it, greater effectiveness is achieved (Dhar, 2002). In the paper, one of the Fortune’s 100 Best Companies to Work For, 2011, Marriott International has been taken into consideration and the company’s profile including historical background along with a few of the organization behavior practices like group behaviors, communication and leadership approaches have been discussed. Company’s Profile Marriott International Inc is one of the leading lodging companies with in excess of 3400 lodging establishments operating in more than 68 countries and territories among others. Headquarter of this company is situated in Bethesda, Maryland, the USA and has approximately 1, 37,000 employees working across the cross border regions. The company has a standing committee consisting Board of Directors acting as a top management team leading from the front. The company deals with luxurious hotels, resorts and real estate’s around the world particularly located in the United States, Canada, Europe, Middle East, Africa, Caribbean areas and Asia Pacific regions among others (Marriott, 2011). It has been recognized by Fortune as one of the best companies to work for and also is one of the greener companies in America. The company was selected in this prestigious list due to certain changes made in the business policies by the leaders of Marriott International compared to the last year i.e. 2010. In addition, due to performing its corporate responsibilities towards the business values of the company’s ethical and legal standards along with its influence upon the environmental factors and towards the society as well made the platform for Marriott International to acquire the place in Fortune’s Best Companies to Work For, 2011. In lieu of this, the company’s pioneering products and services, diversity in ownership and its positive value towards its owners and franchisees also count for Marriott International to remain in Fortune’s Best Companies to Work For in 2011 (Marriott, 2011). Importance of Group Behavior in an Organization A group, in an organization, can be defined as two or more persons’ interaction with each other in such a way that each person gets influenced by the other. It can be defined in terms of perception, motivation and interactions of the organization. It is very much essential for an organization to form such a group in order to understand and analyze the behavior of people within the organization in order to achieve the desired goals of the business. From the managerial perspective, the work group behavior is a key approach where the managers of a particular organization co-ordinates with the individual’s behavior in order to expand its business. The importance of group behavior in an organization constitutes proper control on various policies of the organization, increases the motivation approach among the employees, increases productivity, establishes proper ways of communication and enhances decision making procedure of an organization (Griffin, 2011). Importance of Communication in an Organization Communication of an organization can be defined as the exchange of expressions, thoughts, ideas and emotions between individuals or groups within the organization which plays an essential role in balancing individual and organizational objectives (Boyaci & Et. Al., 2006). The importance of effective communication of an organization includes greater co-ordination and communication among the workers that increases to certain extent through proper ways of communication. Also the pace of work of the organization becomes faster with effective process of communication along with increasing more knowledge and innovation among the key personnel’s working within the organization. In this connection, communication technologies and networks are increasingly essential to an organization’s structure and strategy. In lieu of this, proper and effective communication leads to the development in proper distribution of work processes among the employees which are recognized to be very common in any organization (Baker, 2002). Importance of Leadership in an Organization Leadership of an organization can be defined as examining situations and determining various plans and procedures in order to achieve expected goal of the business in an organization. In the theory of leadership, a particular leader develops the mission, the vision and the values to determine the structure of any organization and also they are personally involved in ensuring the organization’s management system into a developed one. A particular leader always motivates supports and recognizes the people within the organization (Gill, 2006). The importance of leadership of an organization includes stimulating and encouraging empowerment, innovation and creativity in various plans and procedures adapted by the organization. In this connection it can be said that, leadership also supports and is recognized to be engaged in several activities in order to maintain policy delivery and strategy. In addition, the features or the characteristics of quality leadership is to personally communicate about the organization’s mission, ideas, values, policies and procedures, strategies, plans and objectives to different individuals working within the organization (Gill, 2006). Marriott’s Approach on Group Behaviors The various approaches taken by managers of Marriott bring certain opportunities for them to expand both personally and professionally by leading a few of the most committed and passionate teams in the industry. The managers of Marriott International focus upon the group behaviors that the individuals perform during its operation. The managers of Marriott International are responsible for developing profitable business operations and strategies that meet with the business goals and also demonstrating their ideas, values and opinions for effective leadership teamwork along with mentoring the next upcoming leaders (Marriott, 2011). Also the non-management staffs of Marriott provide excellent and soothing services to various guests, members, residents and visitors with utmost care which is eventually a key success factor of this company. The employees of the company interact with each other and get influenced with their unique talent and quality features. Marriott International forms such groups between the management and the non management employees that understand the behavior of the people within the organization and hence achieve the desired goal of the business (Marriott, 2011). Marriott’s Approach on Communication Marriott International’s effective and proper methods of communication with the employees, customers, vendors, franchisees and owners provide a powerful strength which helps to reach the qualitative standard in several aspects to different communities. The company realizes that the employees working with them are the greatest assets because they provide active dedication and excellent customer services. In this connection it can be said that, Marriott International gives top priority to its effective ways of communication approach that the company initializes while executing their businesses. The company also introduced performance reward system for the employees, which recognizes the important contributions of both management and non-management employees of the company in order to communicate properly with them (Marriott, 2011). From the shareholders’ point of view, the company as a part of leading worldwide lodging industry, has maintained a polished relationship with the shareholders and also established an adequate method of communication with the company’s respective business partners. By having such dedicated quality features, eventually it increases the pace of growth in the development of its business to a larger extent and ultimately aids it to become one of the leading lodging companies in the world. Also the company reached the targeted debt level in 2010 and improved in its credit ratings among others through its effective process of communication with various key personnel’s workings within the company (Marriott, 2010). Marriott’s Approach on Leadership The most crucial and appropriate function or aim of a leader in any organization is to develop the prevailing mission, vision and values within the organization in order to determine the structure as well as to achieve the desired goals of the business. In this context, J. W. Marriott, the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Marriott International, Inc has incorporated his leadership approach for over 50 years which has transcended the company from being a family restaurant to a international lodging company of repute. He built an extremely beneficial culture that lay emphasis on on the importance of Marriott’s group and identify the values that they convey into the organization (Marriott, 2009). Also Mr. J. W. Marriott started to alter the business model of Marriott International in the late 1970’s from hotel ownership to franchising along with property management. His various innovative strategic decisions allowed the company to hasten its business growth and eventually elaborated its leadership position. In this connection, he also worked to accumulate the greatest portfolio of lodging brands, ranging from limited service to different luxury hotels and resorts. These innovative leadership features of J. W. Marriott have paved the way for his company to achieve superior heights of success (Marriott, 2009). Utilization of The Information By Other Companies to Improve Organizational Environment The various factors like foundation of group behaviors, effective means of communication and leadership functions can be utilized by several other companies in order to achieve the desired goal of the business. The foundation of group behaviors helps a company in determining the behaviors & attitudes of various key personnel which ultimately increase the productivity as well as help to take major decisions against any difficulties faced by the company immediately in order to improve its business environment (Gill, 2006). Apart from this factor, a company if follows an effective means of communication among its employees, investors, shareholders, customers and owners then the pace of business growth of that very particular company ultimately enhances. Also, proper distribution of work processes among the workers takes place which can be a critical success factor for any company. In this connection, effective means of communication also helps to maintain stronger business and personal relationships among the individuals working in the company which makes an adequate and sustainable working environment for the company to execute its business (Gill, 2006). Keeping apart the group behavior and communication factors, another significant factor in order to improve the organizations business environment is implementing proper, dedicated as well as innovative leadership approach. It includes developing the ideas, policies and procedures that can meet with the demand of the customers, proper implementation of various plans adapted by the company, introducing innovative strategies in order to achieve the ultimate goal of the business along with improving the business environment (Gill, 2006). Conclusion With the increasing competition in the financial markets, every organization has to implement proper ideas, plans or policies along with maintaining different strategic factors like foundation of group behaviors, effective means of communication and several leadership approaches in order to achieve the desired success and to improve the overall business environment that exists. In the study, it has been observed that Marriott International has become one of the leading lodging organizations in the world from a small business firm and also acquired the position in the prestigious ‘Fortune’s 100 Best Companies to Work For’ list in 2011 through proper implementation of various strategic factors. The group behavior, communication and innovative leadership style employed in Marriott are the major and the crucial strategic success factors which are responsible for their huge success.
