The Enhancer trap allows the investigation of how and when enhancer DNA sequences can affect gene regulation, and also aid in the determination of their possible location. The enhancer trap uses reporter genes that can be inserted randomly within the genome. An enhancer is a DNA region that contains one or more context-specific transcription factor binding sites. The studies by Nodrega and co-workers have evolved that the conserved non-coding elements in a gene desert next to the DACH/Dach gene showed that though the functional long enhancer is megabases away from its target gene, the enhancer will activate the of interest. The evolutionarily conserved enhancers are able to drive the spatiotemporally distinct subdomains. (Kituka et. al, 2007).
3. Some of the transposons inserted into the host DNA move inside the genome via an RNA intermediate or through the cut-paste mechanism. Some of the transposons take s the advantage of the host’s cellular machinery to enter into the host cell's cellular machinery and proliferate into the genome and enter into the new hosts. The analysis of the C.elegans genome has shown that approximately 12% of the total genome was derived from the transposable elements. This indicates that it is not necessary that all the transposons insertions should be carcinogenic. The reason for the absence of mutagens is for many reasons. One among them is the miniature inverted-repeat transposable elements (MITEs).
