The American Geriatrics Society, 60: 862-868Hypothesis: The authors argue that those females, who consume more fruits and vegetables in combination with high physical activity, live longer.Description of the studyThe main goal of the study is to reveal how consuming carotenoids and active way of life influence the duration of life. The authors conducted the investigation with the help of Six Cox proportional hazards models.
The models analyze the connection between physical activity, consuming fruits and vegetables and the duration of life. Other models were also applied to reveal if consuming healthy food and physical exercises influence the duration of life conjointly. Such factors as race, level of education and age are taken into account.Results and conclusionThe study revealed that sedentary life and consuming too little amount of fruits and vegetables contribute to early mortality of women. It is interesting that the results showed that if to combine physical activity with fruits and vegetables intake, it is possible to improve health and increase the duration of life.
Significance/implications: the study is very useful as it reminds us about the necessity to conduct healthy way of life, namely to consume more fruits and vegetables and do exercises. The investigation is very relevant in the modern world, where many people conduct sedentary way of life that leads to early death.
