The sequencing of the maize genome is an activity in pursuit of the reduced production costs and increased quality of maize products. The process that is involved in the study of the maize genome is quite complex and requires a lot of time and resources. It is actual estimated that the maize genome accounts for about 2500 million bp, six times more than that of rice in size, and almost the same size as the human genome (Chandler & Brendel 1595). The project is estimated to cost about 52 million USD in total according to Chandler & Brendel (1595).

The data gathered from the research will be availed to maze researchers and farmers so as to aid the production of high quality products. Essentially, the research on maize genome will help researchers understand the biological system of plants while at the same time allowing farmers to have desired traits in their crops as they get to choose molecular strategies for breeding maize in a refined way.
