But the best part is that I wash and save the tub after I am done because it makes a great container for my small bits and pieces, like nails, screws, nuts and bolts, and other loose odds and ends. These containers would also be great for crafts such as beading. Put a few bags of one or two types of beads in the tub and snap on the top. They are also stackable too and when they are painted (or spray-painted), then they are decorative as well. As I have cats, I buy kitty litter in large flap-top tubs too.

The excellent part about this is, once they are empty, I can wash out the tub and then store unused items in there such as winter sweaters in plastic bags, or books I know I will not look at again for a while, or just about anything I do not want to have lying around cluttering up my space. While this is great, the best part is that I can also spray paint the outsides too, then create or stencil designs on the outside so they don’t look like kitty litter tubs, and then I can stack those too.

If I need a quick cheap bookcase, then I place two of these about four feet apart and sitting up against a wall. Then I buy lumber boards from the home improvement center and lay my first shelf on top of the first two tubs on the floor. Now I add another shelf once I have placed two more tubs on top of either side of the first shelf and lay another plank across that. I keep adding shelves until I am done. Not only do I have a new bookcase, but it also stores things and no one knows about it. If I have to move, then I just easily take it apart and I can pack it into my car.

There is no muss or fuss, no nails or screws, and it even looks pretty after I decorate the outside of the kitty litter tubs with stencils. I also save all my laundry bottles that have those spots on them where you can lay a tub on its side and just press the spout button to get the soap in a little cup. Once the soap tubs are empty, I wash them out and save them for camping trips where I can add water for washing dishes or, if I cleaned it well enough, I can store drinking water. One of these is good to keep in the car for emergencies too although changing the water every week is a good idea.

Storing drinking water for any length of time is not a good idea in plastic containers. The last piece of plastic I recycle is those plastic bags from the grocery store. I use them as liner in my trash baskets and when full, I pull them out, tie the handles up and then snip the hand loops so that animals will not get their heads stuck through them. Trash may end up in open garbage dumps there is always the chance that a cat or dog could get their necks into those loops and then choke themselves.

I have also seen pictures of fish and other marine life in the ocean with plastic bags hung around their necks. That shouldn’t happen. WATER CONSERVATION I spoke of water storage in the previous paragraph and, empty wine bottles with their sterilized corks, are great to use when storing water for long periods of time. Unlike plastic containers, water stays very fresh when stored in glass containers. So, rather than throw away all that glass when I finish a bottle of wine, I just rinse it out with hot waters and clean the cork well, then add fresh water to the bottle, close it with the sterilized cork and store it in a dark place.

This is very handy when the water system goes out at home and you need water to drink, or you need to use the toilet.
