Introduction The following paper presents various samples of the various metropolitan statistical areas (MSA) with populations of more than 1,000,000. The tables give the results as given by the United States Census Bureau. The main towns of the metropolitan statistical study areas are also given. Northeast 1. New York-Northern New Jersey-Long Island, New York –New Jersey-Pennsylvania From the four census regions the first sample of study to be considered will be from north east. The New York metropolitan statistical area has the city with the largest number of people within the United States of America. New York had the largest population in the country, according to the United States census bureau. The population census carried out in 2010 placed the City’s population at 8,175,133. This represented a 2.1 percent increase from the 8,008,278 population census figure of 2000. The population in 2000 had increased by 9.3 percent to this figure up from 7 322564 in 1990. This showed a continuous increase in the population of the city from 1990 to 2010. Demographic estimations still show a steady increase in the population of New York City. The whole metropolitan study area in general posted similar results to its major City. There was an increase of 8.66 percent in the growth of the area’s population from 16,863,671in 1990 to 18,324,459 in 2000 and a further increase to 18,897,109 in 2010. This represents a 3.12 percentage increase in the population. All the neighboring cities and suburbs close to New York and within the New York-Northern New Jersey-Long island, New York –New Jersey-Pennsylvania posted significant increases in population from 1990 to 2000 with Pike posting the highest increase in population with a 64.3 percent rise in population over this period. Essex had the lowest growth rate with a 2.1 percent increase. Between 2000 and 2010 the rate of growth in the population reduced with the highest increase in the number of people being recorded in Pike City with a 23.9 rise in population, down from a previous record of 64.3 percent. All the New Jersey Pennsylvania towns recorded a drop in their percentages of population. Essex recorded a drop in population over the 2000- 2010 period with a negative deviation of -1.3 percent. Net migrations of people into New York caused this net increase in growth with the statistics showing that 36 percent of the New York population is ‘Foreign born’. Conversely, the Buffalo falls Niagara metropolitan study area posted only negative variations in population growth from 1990 to 2000. The Metropolitan study area in its generality posted a -1.62 percentage drop with its main town, Buffalo, registering a high population decrease from 328123 in 1990 to 292648 in 2000 amounting to a drop of – 10.8 percent. The largest negative deviation was registered in Orchard Park, a suburb of Buffalo where the population decrease was -12.2 percent. The period between 2000 and 2010 was not any different as the region still had a steady population decline with Buffalo leading with a population decrease of 10.7 percent. Orchard Park is the only town which boasted of a rise in population with its population rising from 27637 to 29054. The district profile of the Federal bank of New York points out that the number of people with college degrees is 27 percent which is below the 31.6 percent average for the state. The income for households is also recorded as being below average which may be the reason for the decline in population as people migrate to other areas to search for greener pastures (Federal Reserve Bank of New York, pp2). The decline in population is also because of the shifting of population from towns to the suburbs and migration from the Northeast to considerably warmer areas in the south and the west. Coupled with reduced levels of migration into these metropolitan area has led to decline in population over most of its regions (Garcia, 1). The Milwaukee- Waukesha-west Allis metropolitan statistical area experienced a general rise in the population of the region with a positive deviation of 4.8 percent being recorded between 1990 and 2000 and another increase of 3.7 percent between 2000 and 2010. Even though the general population of the study area increased, major cities in the region like Milwaukee and Racine recorded a drop in population between 1990 and 2010. Milwaukee had a -5 percent drop between 1990 and 2000 followed by a subsequent drop of -0.4 between 2000 and 2010 while Racine suffered a -2.9 and -3.7 percent drop between 1990 and2000 and between 2000 and 2010 respectively. The Indianapolis-Carmel metropolitan statistical area posted high rates of population increase with the population in some of their major towns like Carmel experiencing more than a 100 percent growth in population between 200 and 2010.Avon had a similar significant increase in population recording a 99.2 percent rise in population. The area had a general population growth of 17.8 percent between 1990 and 2000. This percentage increased to 15.2 between 200 and 2010.This increase in population is attributed to the baby boom generation (Kinghorn, pp2) Between 1990 and 2000 San Antonio-new Braunfels metropolitan statistical area recorded a markedly high increase in population growth with most areas within the metropolitan study area recording over 20 percent of population increase. The wider san Antonio Braunfels region witnessed a 21.6 rise in population which on dropped slightly to 25.2 percent between the 2000 and 2010 period. The major town in the region, San Antonia recorded significant levels of population growth between these periods. It had a 22.3 population increase between 1990 and 2000 and a 16 percent increase in population between 2000 and 2010.Bandera experienced the highest growth in population between 1990 and 2000 amongst these towns with a 67.1 percent rise in population between these periods. Orlando- Kissimmee-Sanford metropolitan study area Florida was also among the regions in the south that experienced significant levels of population growth. The metropolitan study area had a 34.2 percent increase in population between 1990 and 2000. The population grew from 1,224,844 to 1,644,509 in this period of time. Between 2000 and 2010, the population growth slackened a little. The percentage increase in population reduced to 29.7 percent. There was general increase in population across the whole south. This is because of the general migration of people from Northeast and Midwest regions into the south areas of the country and the western regions (Population Reference bureau, pp 6). San Francisco-Oakland-Fremont Metropolitan study area California in the west also enjoyed population growth between 1990 and 2000. The population of the metropolitan study area increased from 3,711,756 to 4, 123,734 providing a percentage value of 11.0 in growth. By 2010, the population had grown to 4,335,391 representing a 5.1 percentage rise from 2000. San Francisco which is the major city in the metropolitan study area contributed to this rise in population significantly. It had a 7.3 percent rise in population between 1990 and 2000 with the number increasing from 723959 to 776733 over a ten year period. San Rafael posted a positive deviation too as it registered a 15.8 and 2.9 percentage rise in population between 1990 and 2000 and between 2000 and 2010 respectively. Conversely some towns registered drops in population Oakland being among them. After experiencing a 7.3 percent rise in population between 1990 and 2000 but this growth stopped and between 2000 and 2010, the population dropped by -2.2.Population fluctuations in California may be due to migration patterns of the Black community in the region. The black people in the region moved in large numbers to other states with Texas, Georgia and Nevada being the main beneficiaries (Teranishi, 5). The USA population depends on automobiles more than any other population in the industrialized world. But with the great recession biting and population still increasing in the major metropolitan study areas, there is need to streamline the public transportation infrastructure, put measures in place to fight pollution and decrease the energy spending and usage in order to have sustainable development in the urban areas. The new York-northern new jersey-long Island and Los Angeles-Long beach-Santa Ana are the metropolitan areas that are in great need of these changes. Any reforms in energy, infrastructure and pollution control will have the most impact in these two areas as they currently have the most population in the United States of America. Conclusion The population of the United States is on an upward trend and will continue increasing for the foreseeable future. Most of the population growth is significant in Cities and with confirmation that the number of illegal and legal immigrants was 40 million in 2010 there is a need to put structures in place to handle this increase in population.
