The warm temperate climate of the plain area of North China is conducive to the practice of growing two crops a year or three crops in two years. Since there are benefits accrued from well-developed irrigation, low elevation, adequate amount of heat and connected farmland, North China is the main growing area of winter wheat, corn, cotton, peanut and tobacco; and additionally apple, pear, peach and grape, which are grown also in the Liaodong Peninsula, the old river course of the Huanghe River, and northwest and southwest China.

In China, during the past quarter century of reform, there has been surprising resilience in China’s economic performance. Not only did the country successfully weather the Asian financial crises of the late 1990s, but also substantially restructured its state enterprise sector and opened itself to the international economy by adopting the World Trade Organization rules. “For two decades now, China has sustained an annual average rate of growth of GDP about 6 percentage points higher than that of the United States”.

According to Maddison, the reasons for China’s improvement in economic performance are effective re-allocation of resources both human and physical; adaptation of foreign technologies to their factor proportions, and successful utilization of opportunities for specialization which arise from integration into the world economy.
