Extract of sample "Photo Interpretation"

The girl is dressed in indigenous Turkish attire and seems happy. Different interpretations can be made on the picture depending on the viewer’s perception and context (Terry Barret 1986). The photographs internal, external, and original contexts can be described as follows:

Internal context of the photo

This is a photograph represents a young girl probably from the middle or low class in Turkey. From the dressing style, we can identify her social class. In Turkey, the low class, middle class, and the primitive communities dress in this manner; that is, ahead scuff and baggy skirts and trousers. Since the Turkish population is composed of Majority Muslims, we can also attribute this kind of dressing to the Muslim region.

This is a countryside setting in the Toros Mountainous region where the majority of the people are nomads. The girl seems happy and this can be attributed to the good life in the countryside. She also seems healthy as the place is known to provide varieties of foods like milk meat and sugar beets.

From the dress code, we can tell that this is probably a winter season. During the winter season in Turkey, temperatures are low therefore, residents dress in baggy clothing covering most of the body parts. This girl is dressed in socks and a head scuff clearly showing it is a cold season.

External context

The background depicts a green environment in a mountainous region. This part can also indicate a well-conserved environment in the countryside. It also shows the good and conducive environment in the countryside to attract people from living in the populated urban areas. This is also supported by the girl’s smiling face that shows she is happy in her home place. This shows how the Turkish countryside is still full of potential (Terry Barret 1986).

The girl is dressed in the historical attire of the indigenous Turkey dwellers. This signifies that the Turkish countryside still upholds the traditions and that the indigenous culture is still upheld. The original inhabitants of Turkey have remained unchanged in their traditions in terms of food consumed and clothing.

Original context

This is considered as what was present physically and psychologically at the photographed scene. This is the photographer’s reason and insight for taking the image. In this context, the photographer had the aim of using color to portray the cultural diversity of Turkey. As many may know Turkey to be a European country that is developed, this picture can demonstrate the underdeveloped part of Turkey. This is marked by the Primitive population living in the countryside and mountainous regions.

This girl is dressed in a multi-colored dress. The photographer is passing information to viewers about the cultural diversity of Turkey. The different cultures unite to form Turkey. They may be composed of various traditions, dress codes, educational backgrounds, and even religion but united as a nation.

This photograph is merely a little girl smiling but can a lot about Turkish ethnicity. Different views may have a different view on the photo’s interpretation depending on the context presented. In this context, cultural diversity is the view that ought to be held by the photographer. The young girl is from a nomad community in the hilly region of Turkey called Toros. She can be used to represent her nomadic community. This will mean that her people are leading happy life. She can also represent children in the countryside; they are healthy and happy in the countryside.

Most people may think that the Toros Mountains are unfavorable dwelling places but this happy girl has ruled this out. From the photograph, this girl seems happy with the lifestyle they lead. The dress signifies an integrated cultural diversity. Turkey is composed of Christians, Jews, and Muslims. All these have peacefully co-existed over time. This is what is revealed by the various colors that have been combined to make up the girl's dress.
