It happened at the World’s Fair The uniquely connecting movie was released in the year 1963 by starring Elvis Presley. In the movie, he is depicted as a cropdusting ambitious pilot who together with his friend Danny was trying to earn a living. It is also important to realize that at the release of the movie, the then governor Washington, USA, Albert Rosellini was setting the executive of the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. The film made approximately $ 2.25 million then.
Like in the summary above, the movie is about one pilot Mike Edwards referred to as Elvis Presley in the movie play who finds himself in a dilemmatic situation after his friend and ally Danny ()Gary Lockwood) embezzled the cash Mike had set aside for the purpose of settling his debts. This unexpected move by Danny occasioned auctioning of their plane to the highest bidder by the local sheriff. They were to pay a debt of $1,200 which was given a grace period of twelve days after which the plane will be auctioned. After this, they had nothing to do and decided to be hitchhikers in order to earn a living. They were out to find a lift that will take them anywhere. In this unrelenting effort, they were fortunate to be picked by Walter Ling (Kam Tong) and Sue-Lin (Vicky Tui), the latter was Tong’s niece. Tong is an apple farmer.
The apple farmer took the two to Seattle, Washington the venue of the 1962 world fair. During this time, a lot of underplays and intrigues took place, Tong was called to attend a business meeting and this meant that he was to leave behind the nice, Vicky. Danny then advised Mike to take Vicky to the fair, during their time in the fair; they made a visit to the doctor’s stand where Mike started courting Diane Warren (Joan O’Brien). Diane is depicted as one of the very difficult personality as she persistently and consistently resisted Mike advances. In a very dramatic even, she ended up stage-managing an even in which she pays a boy to kick Mike’s shin so that she can get an opportunity to treat her since she was a nurse. During this time, Mike was also courting Dorothy Johnson (Yvonne Craig). In the final episode of the play, several intrigues happened where Walter mysteriously disappeared and could not be traced leaving Mike with Sue-Lin. Diana became privy to this and contemplated informing the welfare board. Mysteriously, Mike and Vince (H.M Wynant) Danny’s long-standing friend receives a plane delivery.
Thesis of the Film
The theme of the book is betrayal. In several instances in the film, we witness intrigues depicting betrayal. The first instance of betrayal one encounters is when Danny embezzles the funds and Mike could not settle his debts making his life to be uncertain. Walter after being called in a business meeting goes forever leaving the niece in a very uncertain ground without where to go. She is left in the hands of the stranger, Mike who just got the opportunity to take her to the fair because Walter was away. During this time, Mike started courting Diana and at the same time. He is also courting Dorothy; this is also a manifestation of betrayal. Diana pays a boy to inflict injuries on Mike in bid to make her have an opportunity to treat him and later get privy to the unbearable circumstance Mike and Sue-Lin are in and wants to report them this forms the hallmark of betrayal in the film.
Issues in the Film
The film depicts how people can take opportunity and utilize them for their own benefits. It also depicts how treacherous human being can be even to the most trusted friend. The film portrays some of the characters in the films as so unfeeling and cold –bloodedly callous, the case of Walter leaving Sue in very strange hands, the case of Diana choreographing the event in which she pays a boy to create injuries on Mike. The case of Danny misusing Mike money and ultimately renders them a situation of helplessness. Also to some extent, issues of intimacy are also addressed in the film though strange coupled with characters that are unfeeling.
Response to the Author
In my view, the director of this film did a commendable work. He has made a moving story form one episode to the next. The events observed in the film connect in unique manner with an amazing suspense. There are interesting turn of events in the film with every character significantly contributing to the development of the plot of the film. The originality of the film is one of the amazing considering its production in the 1960s. The professionalism considered in editorial and final choreography is superb. The film is one of its own considering how events connects and I say kudos to the director.
Change of Prior Ideas
Well, I have no ideas that have been altered in after watching the movie. This is because I did not have a preformed idea before watching it. Prejudices in such situation do not allow a viewer to have a honest consideration of the book/film. To that extent, I did not have initial feelings on what happed or what did not. I wanted to gain the originality of the film by taking a neutral position. Though I now know the content of the movie, I can only contribute in making the story longer in case that would be preferred but for the bit that was directed, I find it interesting and would wish to appreciate the original intention of the director.
Personal Critique
The director considered every character in the play by giving them important role to play in the film, there are no dormant characters, every one has a reason of being there, and they all contribute in the plot development constructively. The director has also depicted unique movie directing and connectivity in terms of events unfolding. At the same time, the film ought to have been longer than this, it end when one expects more to come given the plots development and the general story chronology. I believe the story should have been two folds what is given.
