Extract of sample "Self-Portrait Collage"

Art is meant to be enjoyed both by the artist and the audience. Collage is no exception to it. The self-portrait composition of a collage is very personal and being such, I made the process of making it very personal by allowing myself as much as creative license by being spontaneous in creating the collage. I would like to enjoy the process by expressing myself in creating myself through the self-portrait. I observed few rules in creating in this self-portrait collage. These rules are just enough to make the artwork coherent.

Since the collage is about a portrait of me, I made the subject the focal point where all other elements will highlight the subject. I also intend to contrast the subject with its periphery to draw the attention of the audience to me or at least that is the idea. It is hoped that with the variety of images added to the portrait, the audience will have an idea on how diversified and occupied the subject is. The alternate images to complete my portrait served as metaphors or are symbols of how diversified or erratic I can get.

I have a lot of interest that occupy my thought and hopefully, I was able to express that in the collage. In rendering the collage, I may be aware of color theory of how contrasting colors can highlight the other and how to achieve balance within the frame but I made some compromise to make the portrait more personal by allowing more spontaneity and self-expression in creating it. This approach is no longer new. One of the famous collage artist who creates collage by various materials or images that can be found to enhance or create another image is Jacque Parsley of Mexico.

His work such as the Smiling Kittie may seem incoherent as a portrait of a kitten but is nevertheless interesting to look at. The artist integrated seemingly incoherent images and even a number in the picture without regard to their placement but still, the image evoked interest from its audience. One can readily feel without understanding that Jacque Parsley enjoyed creating this image. The number 3 and the angel including the stamps and feather looked totally unrelated to the kitten but still they are a joy to look at.

Personally, I lend inspiration from Jacque Parsley of just enjoying in creating my self-portrait collage and I hope that the audience also enjoyed looking at it as much as I enjoyed doing it.
