Suprematism, Constructivism and De Stijl Suprematism, constructivism and De Stijl are three art revolutions that emerged in the early 20th Century. They all had their purposes and reasons for emergence, and they significantly changed the practice and perception of modern art. Suprematism and Constructivism emerged from Russia following different occasions and circumstance while De Stijl was an art form that was developed by a group of artists from Netherlands later after the previous two art concepts.

Even though they appeared at different periods, they had similarities, which blended them in a common essence. At the same time, the three art concepts had differences, which tabled them as creatively and uniquely artistic projections. Similarities and Differences of the Art Styles The abstract arts: Suprematism and Constructivism developed in Russia while De Stijl developed in Holland. They all developed at the beginning of the 21st century. From 1917, the Bolshek revolution led to the blooming of the modernist styles.

Suprematism developed as a spiritual freedom art that did not present art as a representation of material actual objects but as an emotional, inner feeling of one’s imagination that evoked meditation. It utilized the use of color, brush strokes and visual rhythm to engage spirituality. Kasimir Malevich founded the non-objective art in 1913. Malevich believed that the supreme reality of art was to liberate from the representational world and evoke ‘pure feeling.’ Bothe Malevich and Lissitzky believed that art could be used as an agent of change, and this was specified to societal change in Constructivism.

Suprematism Paintings by Kasimir Malevich Source: (Pioch 1) Constructivism on the other hand developed when Russians faced many social and political injustices and there was need for art not to represent existing objects, but to address the needs of the people. It revolutionized art from’ art for art’s sake’ to ‘art for the society.’ Art in this style has addressed the needs of the society, and has influenced the modern world on political, social and architectural realms. El Lissitzky, a Russian, contributed to this artistic revolution by developing constructivism.

The art form, as Suprematism, used similar geometric language but abandoned the mystical vision that favored its ‘socialism of vision.’ It was a Utopian projection of a mechanized modernity. Pioneered by El Lissitzky, Naum Gabo, Rodchenko and Tatlin are some of the best arts accredited with the works of Constructivism. The Proun by Lissitzky Proun, 1925. Source: (Art Experts 1) De Stijl later developed in Holland. The artists that largely contributed to this development were Theo Doesburg, Piet Mondrian and Gerrit Reitveld.

It developed from the predecessors arts: Suprematism and Constructivism, and had similar artistic ideologies that sought to give art a different definition and interpretation that did not only exist in the material universe. De Stijl was mainly architectural and contributed to the creation of various design that are reflected in the today’s creations. The main colors in the application of the style are red, blue, and yellow, black and white. Alexander Rodchenko observed the whole course and abandoned painting to imply a personal expression of turning to visual communication. He made this decision since he felt that he was responsible to the society. The ideas of these movements were later adopted in Poland, Hungary and Czechoslovakia. Works Cited Art Experts.
