There are many controversial debates on the reasons for the establishment and purpose of the monument.

From justified studies, it is not wrong to argue that this monument was designed based on the social, political, and economic lives of the Russian people at that time when the country was undergoing and struggling for change in society in each section of life. And this was around the nineteen nineties (1900s) when the artist Tatlin decided to gather his knowledge and borrow from other great philosophers to finally design a structure of glazed volumes such as cubes, cylinders, pyramids, and hemispheres.

According to Punin’s description as from Lodder’s notes, the tower is considered to be a “…functional building, created to actively participate in the making of revolution, to function as a machine promoting world revolution by acting as the administrative and propaganda center…” in align with this thinking Tatlin got the ague to inspire people with revolutionary thoughts and heroic quality of the time. In short, he opted to create a reminder to the people of Russia of their remarkable time through that tower. After being furnished by glass and iron and being called “the material of modern classicism ” Lissitzky declares the materials to have a meaning as per social society. Iron means the strong will of the proletariat who are the working class and glass to show a clear conscience.

Despite Tatlin having a lot of support for his arguments concerning the tower, there were some critics. For example, Lodder states that the tower's relationship to Bolshevik ideology is far from straightforward, simply because the tower has no clear exact nature of dynamism. Lodder argues that the incorporation of the rotating structures answers no discernible technological, functional, or structural requirements. Furthermore, as per Lodder’s notes, Trotsky stands out to criticize Tatlin’s design when he states that the design is far from presenting a practical utilization of current technological possibilities. From these critics, the ideas of Tatlin can work but there has not been any practical evidence in the technological sector.

In conclusion, the Tatlin monument to the third international is seen as a symbol of revolution which was designed to bring back and honor the noteworthy heroes and periods of the country’s status. The remarkable moment marked a new beginning and a major turning point for Russia. Read More
