Final Reflection Final Reflection Introduction This has been very instrumental to me and the impact it has created in me is very significant. Before I undertook this course, I had a completely different attitude towards arts in general. I never gave art the attention it deserves as I used to take art as some complex work that takes time to understand. As I grew up, I would hear people saying that art needs interpretation and deeper understanding and this is where I had difficulties. However this has changed after going through this course. I have been able to develop new skills and deeper insight of how art has its relevance in communication and expressing different ideas in different styles. According to Perkins (2008) art is an independent tool of communication that is not bound to time. The message in art is also not limited to language or geographical surrounding. The message in art is global and tackles issues regarding humanity in various ways. Enhanced visual communication In artistic work can be used to communicate multiple messages concurrently with different meanings. This is what makes art unique and different. This course has given me a deeper insight on how to visually interpret art and skills necessary to interpret an artistic work. I have been able to understand that every work of art has more details than what we see at a first glance. With keen observation and background understanding of the artist and interpretation of different styles of art, one can get limitless information and details about an art. During the course, Bosch Hieronymus’ painting known as "Hell" was disturbing at first glance. But after an analytical and keen observation of the painting, I started realizing different concepts, ideas and symbols within the painting. There was so much in play within the painting and by visually analyzing it, the painting communicated so much especially concerning hell and punishment after death. In the painting, I was able to capture different kinds of torture humans are taken through by demons. Through the painting, I was able to get a visual perspective of how hell and the concept of eternal torture looks like. According to Rembert (2012) Bosch used his work to connect different worlds by creating visual curiosity and uncommon presentations to capture peoples attention. In general, I have now developed a keen attention to what I see around to such a way that I try to get more meaning than what everyone else is seeing. My perspective on visual communication has been enhanced to more of an analysis wherever I see anything. This does not only apply to art but everything around me. I have come to realize that art itself is all over and all round us. There are people who have been able to use art to communicate unknowingly and with my understanding of how this can be interpreted visually, I have been able to make sense of things around me. Different aspects have now become relevant to me and symbolic too. By observing peoples choice color in terms of dressing, their hair styles among others has helped me understand them more and what they want to express to the world. Perception of art and its influence on my life Allan (2008) says that art has always been part of human life and its role cannot be limited by anything. Art does not have a particular language but can be applied to all people. Through this course, my understanding of what art is has made me appreciate the role it plays in human life. Before I took this course, my understanding of art was primarily based on paintings and complex images. This has been changed as I now understand that art goes beyond paintings, drawings. Instead it covers different aspects of human life ranging from films, video, sculptures among others. With this information I now understand and appreciate the work of different artists and the effort they make in communicating through visual art. At the beginning of the course, the class did not seem interesting and fun, but once I understand what art is all about, a strong interest developed in me and I started paying more attention to class work and even took a step further to do personal research after class as a way of trying to get more conversant with art. I now appreciate the role of art in my life. I no longer watch films for entertainment alone and excitement. I have developed a liking to deeper concepts of different messages taking place in the film. During the course, I took time to watch some of the famous fashion shows. I have never been a fun of fashion shows but with the comprehension of art and its diversity, I decided to watch FL Miami Beach Fashion Week Resort, the Paris Fashion Week (Mode à Paris), the Milan Fashion Week in Italy and Canada Festival Mode and Design Montreal. At this point, my understanding of how designers use clothing as a form of art was driving me to be keener and on this particular occasion was amazed by how designers were able to use symmetrical balance in their work, use of rhythm to create unity with different principles in their work and many more. Break-through perspective My perspective about body tattoos has been completely transformed. I used to see tattoo as a way of human beings decorating their bodies or enhancing the skin beauty. What I never gave attention is the symbolism and meaning engraved within these works of art. I had been thinking of getting a tattoo but I did not find it relevant as I found my skin to be just fine. This course has changed my perspective as now understand that people use tattoos to express different ideas and even tell stories. There is so much that is within a tattoo than just the beauty and the unique designs. People use tattoos to even tell stories or hold memories of past experiences. According to Allen (2006) tattoo itself as an artistic work is unique in that it tends to have human connection in it. My understanding is that every tattoo used by people has a meaning attached to it and the people with them are closely attached to this great artistic work. The traditional understanding of tattoo as being extreme and rebellious needs to be changed because tattoos are creativity expressed through art by designers using needs and ink. Experience of looking I have come to realize that understanding of art goes beyond just looking but rather the whole experience that comes with it. In order to understand visual arts one has to try getting different interpretation of the art and try getting the intended message. According to Taban (2013) visual arts have the ability to carry emotions and memories but can only be acquired by one giving an analytical look and interpretation intended. The first look at Picassos work is not attractive. In his drawing of a nude female figure, one may not be able to understand his work. But a close look at how he was able to combine different geometrical figures and shapes is very unique. The artist uses cubism to express and communicate and this can be attained if one is able to have a deeper observation on the art. Realization of identity Through this class, I have been able to develop my skills in relation to interpretation of visual arts and I have also learnt to appreciate the works of different artists in the world. I have also been able to learn that visual art can be used to express peoples culture and beliefs. I can now relate with the work of the Chinese artists as now I understand different styles that they use to communicate to people. In relation to that, I now understand that art is a global phenomenon and can be used to communicate to all people in the world. I can now relate with all world cultures ranging from Americas, Africa, Europe, and Asia among others.
