Gallery Review The of work that I selected is “Chasmata I”. The medium of it is oil on canvas. The work is two-dimensional, it is a painting, yet it was performed so as to look like as three- dimensional due to perspective tools artist used. “Chasmata I” is a piece of non representational, abstract art. The focus is placed on the huge crater, which appears to be just below the center of the artwork (and a bit right). The perspective is distorted as the horizon is shown diagonally. There is a contrast between “the sky” and “the ground” (to me they look like these objects of “representational” reality).

Another contrast is the crater and the surrounding area. Focal point is definitely the colorful crater that goes deeply; the bright colors change to the darkness to show the depth of it. The work is well balanced due to combination of cold and warm colors; another aspect is that pale grey “sky” that supports the balance of the artwork. The painting is created with tertiary colors. Tints, shades and tones are combined to create the rich color scheme. Color scheme is triadic generally as the artist uses mainly light blue, pink and brown colors – with their hints and shades.

Artist uses widely analogous colors combination to create the volume. There are circles and lines to lead the attention of the viewer deeper inside the crater. To me, the purpose of the work is to depict the multi-dimensional aspect of the reality – there is always something hidden within even seemingly plain things.
