The Fisherman Sculpture The fisherman sculpture is an artistic display of art located at Railroad Avenue at E. 3rd Street, in Pittsburg California (Old Town Pittsburg Historic District). It is arguably one of the city’s first major public artwork. The ‘fisherman’ honors the contribution of the early Italian fishing community (Old Town Pittsburg Historic District). Seeno posits that it is a dedication to Isola delle Femmine which is the City’s Sister City in Italy (1). It was designed and created by a local gifted artist named Frank Vitale.

During the 1970s works of art were employed to enhance and beautify the city. However, beginning 1990s numerous pieces of art emerged in at the old town of Pittsburg, California. They were profound in between the Third and the Fifth streets (Old Town Pittsburg Historic District). The fisherman sculpture is strategically located at the corner of the Third Street. Isola delle Femmine Plaza attributes the sculpture as a dedication to the Sicilian fishermen, the contribution and the impact they accorded the city of Pittsburg.

It is the end of his livelihood and perhaps an era (Seeno 1). He would never fish from these waters again. He holds the net with care, thoughts raze through his mind.

He thinks of eldest son his son. The boy would accompany the father on his fishing expeditions, just as he accompanied the father. Years later, the son built his own boat and fishing became the son’s life as well as Frank notes. This was a dream the son achieved through years of sheer hard work and sacrifice. It sufficed to be a bright day as the fisherman remembered the celebrations that followed the boat’s christening. However, his thought are brought back to the present as the boat passes the harbor having a for sale sign.

He sighs deeply and hopes that the boy would find means to fend for his young family (Seeno 1). In essence, the sculpture gives an artistic description of an old fishermen contemplating about what has been part of him for years. Moreover, it honors the contribution of the early Italian fishing community. It is an amazing piece of art in Pittsburg, California and enhances the beauty of the city in addition to its historical significance. Nonetheless, Frank Vitale was a talented artist, and ‘the Fisherman sculpture’ is a confirmation of his artistic ability.
