The idea that society works best when all people are equal had a significant impact on their art and architecture. Art produced before the great miracle was often rigid, symbolic and formal. However, the Greeks commenced producing realistic art rather than symbolic art. Artists began portraying beauty in man’s image. The term canon often refers to works that have been analyzed and found to represent the best in art. These works of art are thought to be masterpieces and as such, they set standards from which other artworks could be judged (Perry 1999).

The Greeks hold a central place in the history of western art since their high technical specifications and humanist aesthetic art were adopted and emulated by generations of western artists.
