Jeffro Uitto’s ‘Drift Wood Horse Sculpture” Descriptive Criticism Towering over the shores of the sea, the sculptures stands at an impressive eight foot from the ground, the art work captures reality. The piece is made from drift wood that have been swept ashore and later cured. He uses a combination of milling, chaffing and carving styles in pursuit of the perfect piece. In his work the artist uses a number of own made tools such as chisels, customized plane different categories of gouges. The horse sculpture has varying shades of color brown, on its mid section, the piece has an unmistakable shade of brown camel, the hips of the horse both in the fore and back limbs have a questionable shade of desert sand color, and the rest of the horse’s body to be a drift of brown camel to desert sand color. The hurdle’s color is an unmistakable brown coyote color. The sculpture is not painted giving the art work an authentic and original look, agitated but natural look. The horse is symmetrically in shape but not uniform, as a glance at the left and right sides shows different pieces of materials used in its construction. The hurdle on the other hand is purely asymmetrical is design and built. The sculpture covers an area bounded by an approximate length of six feet by three feet. The sculpture is finesse, but given some rough textural external feel especially at the head of the horse and at the tail, the body is joined by different pieces of wood, openly exposed to the eyes of the observer. A horse on a sea front can indeed imply a free spirit, one trying to connect with the inner being and playfully jumping by himself over a piece of barrier solidifies the free spirit of the horse. Indeed the sculpture portraying a break from the burdensome work subjected to him by men is all by himself enjoying the outdoors and playing silly without the direction of an owner. T he strength of the horse is portrayed by its ability to haul its body over the piece of a wood obstacle, and in the process displaying great athleticism that has made horses one of the few chosen animals domesticated by man several years ago. Evaluative Criticism The most conspicuous aspect of the sculpture is the elements being portrayed and depicted. The lone horse in the beach represents a free spirit merry making on the shore. Jumping on a piece of hurdle though associated with domestic horse, seems to attract this wild horse, further fostering the idea that this horse is indeed a free spirit enjoying its freedom on the shores of the lake. The feature on its face shows pure joy in it s freedom. The hind legs are not atypical of horses, perhaps showing how living wildly has taken as aspect of its health and nutrition. The legs display emaciation as a result of hunger form lone living. The art is a valuable for different reasons as horses has occupied the American society since the periods of great migration, as during those periods a number of horses became wild and started roaming the sea shores and the far outlying areas of the country. Importantly, the art has function, and the real implied meaning of the sculpture is all telling information on the history of the region. American art work tends to depict the wild aspects associated with the animals in the Washington state, and a wild horse enjoying a captivating jumps over a hurdle aptly the story of the area. The sculpture is stockier and was developed through milling and chaffing and less curving was done in comparison to the other one. The sculpture is typical of a stallion rising above the rest of the heard in a move to assert dominance. This is a magnificent addition to his works of art reminiscent of his passion for nature and wildness, captured prominently by these two sculptures and many others. The gaze of the shore from the water can only mean that the horse has had enough of the water and was walking away from it.
