Visual art Visual art is a kind of art, the main goal of which is imaging the surrounding world. It creates the works the ethical value of which is perceived only visually. The ability to generate objects is a very important feature of visual art. This kind of art should awake feelings not after the analysis of the picture, but before it. A person should be able to make his/her own conclusions looking at the picture for the first time. The picture should awake philosophical thoughts. Woman Holding a Balance by Vermeer is one of the pictures, which arouses interest.

Pearls, money, gold – embody the wealth and vanity, everyday pleasures of life. Scales in the woman’s hand is a semantic and geometrical approach to composition. Such scales could be found in every house of Nederland. Every province had its currency and weight measures. In order to determine the value of coin, the sellers bit it to economize. Scales were very often associated with conscience like flaring heart. “A shimmering blue cloth, open boxes, two strands of pearls, and a gold chain lie on the sturdy table.

Soft light comes in through the window and illuminates the scene. The woman is so pensive that the viewer almost hesitates to intrude on her quiet moment of contemplation” (Woman Holding a Balance). There is a big picture of the Last Judgment, the one picture is in another picture that is tool often used by Vermeer. The scales are empty, the gold is just patches of light. A woman weighs neither pearls nor gold or her own deeds waiting for the Last Judgment. She is establishing the balance between the pleasures of life and the rules set by the Church.

“Vermeer emphasized this message through his superbly refined composition and lighting. The hand holding the balance, for example, occupies a position directly in front of the frame’s dark corner, while the scales are set off against the bare plaster wall—an effect that Vermeer created through subtle spatial manipulation” (Woman Holding a Balance). Black Lines by Vasiliy Kandinsky is another perfect example of visual art. But modern arts are based not on strict analysis, but on free imagination.

Now the world is changing rapidly and the progress is very fast. Here we can see that visual art leaves a chance for a spectator to guess what the painter wanted to say. Every opinion is correct. is imaging the world surrounding on the picture we can see the colored objects surrounded with black lines. It is interesting that everybody explains the intentions of the painter in his/her own way. The most widespread interpretation is the life, bright and perfect, but crossed by some negative moments, which are unpleasant, but should present, because the composition seems incomplete without them.

Really, but for negative moments, our life would be bore. Visual art is perceived visually and everybody can interpret it in his/her own way. This makes it free and modern kind of art. Moreover, they are invaluable in science, because only imagination can help make innovations. Works Cited Woman Holding a Balance. http://www.nga.gov/Web. September 4, 2014
