German Expressionism: Käthe Kollwitz Käthe Kollwitz was a famous German Painter. Her paintings played an important role in expressing the sufferings of German men, women and children during the war in 20th century. Likewise, the painter in the painting above is expressing her deep empathy towards the sufferings of people. It shows poverty, hunger and war expression of the young children at that time. The painting indicates the compassion of the Painter through the graphic means of etching the helplessness of the people during war time.
The Painting shows a woman crying by holding the dead body of her child in her hands. The basic reflection of the painting shows that how the parents of the children were forced by the tragic situation to let their children die due to hunger in front their eyes. Starving poor children, weeping of children, the cry and helplessness of the parents failing to provide any food to their children, the begging of food, the indigestible death of children, the horrible dark time faced especially by the poor people.
The painter tried to convey the reflection of what is it being a black and poor at that time, the command of whites over poor, the dominance and brutality of whites in contrast to the black and poor. Overall the painter has put her deepest feelings on the paper, trying to show what actually happened to the people during the war. The painting concludes the injustice to the poor people and letting them die in hunger so ordinarily, along with the loudest cry of parents (htt) Works Cited n.d. .
