Was Agrin Justified to Kill? Thesis ment Because Agrin conceived Risa due to rape, she was morally justified when she chose to kill him. Agrin was gang raped by Iraqi soldiers who had invaded her Kurdish community, killed her parents, and amputated her brother Hyenkov (Garcia). As a result, she became pregnant and carried the pregnancy to full term presumably because she had no other options. She might have had no access to medical treatment after the rape that could have stopped conception. She might have had no access to safe abortion facilities to terminate a pregnancy, given the discrimination of Kurdish by the Iraqi government.

Agrin carried the pregnancy to full term and gave birth to Risa. Agrin was justified to kill her baby Risa because, in the first place, she did not choose to engage in sex. Why then should she continue taking care of someone she did not want and she was also not prepared to bring up? Agrin was a victim of rape; no one in the refugee camp knows about it except her brother Hyenkov. All other people in the camp including ‘Satellite’ know Risa as a brother to Agrin and Hyenkov (Ebert). Hyenkov and Agrin have also chosen not to tell anybody about the full story of Risa.

Despite this high-level secrecy, the two must have been aware that the truth will eventually come out. Among the Kurdish, a woman is not eligible for marriage if she has a child outside wedlock irrespective of the circumstance that led to the conception of the child. Agrin is a victim of this societal norm; she has Risa, a rape victim child. The norms of the society are very discriminatory against women. There is no one who will try to understand the untold story of Agrin and Risa and try to examine it from another viewpoint.

Agrin was an innocent teenager like any other child at the time the soldiers raped her. She could not resist because she was helpless. The abuse affected her psychologically; she failed to notice that ‘Satellite’ was interested in her. She was, therefore, justified in killing Risa because he reminded her of the ordeal she underwent under the hands of Iraqi forces. Agrin was an orphan; she had no parents who could help her overcome the trauma she endured due to rape. She also had difficulties in raising her son Risa because of the economic situation at the refugee camp.

Her only consolation was her brother Hyenkov, who loved Risa very much, but Hyenkov himself was as desperate as Agrin. The only means of survival in the camp was scavenging and selling mines to UN peacekeepers. Despite his brilliance in detonating land mines, Hyenkov could do very little to support his sister because he had no arms. He could not scavenge the way other children did because of his limitations. Other refugees in the camp regarded him as a future teller, but this had very little to do with increasing their income (Ebert).

They could not adequately support Risa. Agrin was, therefore, justified in killing Risa because she could not manage to support him. Risa was also a burden to her because she did not willingly conceive him. After killing Risa, Agrin decided to kill herself because she might have felt guilt of taking the life of another human being. She was not morally justified to kill herself because whatever happened in her life in the past was beyond her control. Killing Risa was just an emotional reaction to her trauma.

Because Agrin conceived Risa due to rape, she was morally justified when she chose to kill him. Works Cited Ebert, Roger. “Turtles Can Fly Movie Review & Film Summary (2005).” RogerEbert.com.
