In the review of this movie published in 1999, Washington Post staff writer Stephen Hunter claims that the movie is not worth all compliments it received from critics. He motivates his argument with the fact that this movie has nothing special in it. Moreover, he states that the movie is deprived of charm; it is empty and it is good only for those people who want to kill time. Luckily, this opinion is not shared by mass audiences, and Run Lola Run is treated as a real masterpiece in cinematography.

This huge popularity is achieved by the realization of the most recent tendencies of postmodernism in the film. This movie is a game where the rules are known only to the director, and people discover them together with Lola. The opening scene only supports this suggestion. The movie is the beginning of a football match where the referee blows the whistle. Such a beginning can seem as strange, but it explains the concept of the film. The director wants to play with people who watch the movie.

Every separate episode is unique due to unexpected plot development. The director manages to depict the concept of fate and luck in all of them. In all cases, the chain of events is caused by numerous actions which took place at the same time. All people involved in the story have their specific roles. In any case, the actions are generated on the spot and nobody knows their consequences.

At the same time, the change of a single action or decision causes the situation called the butterfly effect. The whole chain of events becomes radically different. It shows that all events are linked together and any change brings many other changes after it. This game created by the director is very complicated. Unlike people who watch the movie, the director knows everything. All scenes contain all the necessary props and start from the same actions. It is a director who decides where the story goes. People who watch the movie can only guess about the next events in the story.

The elaboration of the storyline is very detailed. Each time the beginning of the story repeats, it becomes easier to notice key details in the scene. The telephone, the bag, and the threat of violence trigger all further events. The repetition of the same scene triggers attention and involvement in people who watch the movie.

The plot becomes very memorable because of the main character Lola. Her red hair and unusual outfit are difficult to forget. Her behavior and delinquent boyfriend also add some tone to the story. Her key role in the film shows her feminist nature. She has to save her boyfriend from gangsters. Usually, the situations when men save women are more typical. This story shifts gender roles and makes Lola more masculine in her actions.

In summary, Run Lola Run is an outstanding film. It is interesting in the way it is edited and directed. It can engage people through unpredictable plot development and composition of the movie. It has memorable characters and a specific storyline. All in all, people are free to choose the outcome of the story they like the best. It is the reason why this movie has a game in it and people are included in the process from the first scenes of the movie. Read More
