The photo is titled Male impersonator (Butch), 1973. Her persistent inquiry into identity formation coincides with her artwork and wants to shake free the girl child who is specifically assigned roles and her behavioral conduct is restricted in the society. This title “Male Impersonation” suits the photographs as she in various cases is impersonating her real identity. Throughout her artwork, she consistently wants to know more about identity and compare it with her real self. In her artwork, she uses a bold, bright color that increases the visibility of her text photograph.
This made the photograph appear clear to her audience. The photograph is of a white person and it would only be clear if it appeared bright. Her scale is good as the photograph is not distorted in any way. The criterion used in choosing this specific photograph from her large gallery is because of its title that suits the theme driven by the artist. I also wish to investigate whether she was successful in conducting her role of feminism. Martha Wilson spend almost her entire life in art doing an investigation in identity and was subjected to females in most of the works.
The painting of Martha Wilson artwork symbolizes the efforts that women struggle in life in fitting in society as a man. Women go to the extent of imposing their image to appear as a man and this in a way has made them enjoy some benefits but eventually, they are recognized as women by society. In her painting, she goes to the extreme of shaving like a man, her hair design is boyish and even her dressing code is that of a man. She chooses to dress in a heavy black jacket which is a color loved by the opposite gender.
The person in the picture looks mature but still has not grown a beard that is something that will raise eyebrows among the people of her society about her gender. Men and women tend to lead a different lifestyle in the way they choose their hobbies, their walking styles, body structures, and even their likes and dislikes.
Despite the endless efforts to disguise one gender, it is difficult to acquire each detail that is possessed by the opposite gender. The missing trait will lead to your gender identification eventually. Martha Wilson in her show she was satisfied that she indeed appeared as a man and courageously entered the rooms as a man but was unsuccessful. What could have been the cause of her failure?
The picture is of a man imposter who appears to be sad, with deep eyebrows.
