The film traces the growing and ironic amity between Chinese villagers and two prisoners of war who by luck were deposited into their care. The prisoners were one wounded Japanese older named Teriyuki Kagawa. According to the film a young widow gets interrupted by door knock where a stranger with a gun identifies himself only as “me” and then deposits two prisoners who are tied up in sacks announcing he would return to get them back at the Chinese New Year. He warns the village that if they escape the repercussions shall be dire.

The two soldiers Kagawa Teruyuki and his translator-Dong Hanchen, Kagawa who is eager to die for the said Japanese imperial cause makes a suicide attempt but fails he then tries to provoke his captors into having them give him the honor of death by hurling inflammatory invectives. However, his interpreter who is desperate to save his life deliberately translates the insults into friendly overtures and praises to the villagers this makes which make them treat the soldiers well with food water and shelter.
