Surrealism, a form of expression Every artist has their way of expressing themselves through a particular piece of artwork whether it be by using a picture, a painting, a sculpture or even a more modern example such as video. But not all artists consider their work to be surreal. Surrealism is a personal form of expression and many great artists such as Paul Klee has the work to prove it. Regardless of where Klee is, he is always creating some form of art. Surrealism is a cultural movement that began in the 1920s and it is best expressed through visual art work and different forms of writings.

By definition, the word surreal pertains to the qualities of a dream. So it is not really happening and it may never happen. It is unreal, or fantastical. The colors, and strokes are something that does not actually appear in the real world. Paul Klee’s says that to paint well, is to put the colors in the right place. That is what Klees art is all about. His pictures are hard to classify. Part of his realism was his ability to combine oil paint, water color, ink, pastel, and etching all into one piece of art.

Klee creates pieces of work which allude to dreams, music and poetry. His drawings and art evoke a reactions in his viewers. Paul says that art does not reproduce the visible; rather, it makes things visible. His 1937 painting called “Sign in Yellow” is a perfect example of surrealism because the images are something you would see in your sleep. The painting features different facial signs and symbols humans make throughout the day. Our ability to see, hear and understand abstract things can often time render us surreal.
