How Does the Monarch Life in Britain in Reflected into the Movie (the monarch role)? The Monarch in Great Britain acts and serves as a figure of national identity, unity and pride. The Monarch is a sovereign but does not rule and succession to the throne is only hereditary. In the movie King’s Speech, the role of the continuity and succession of a Monarch was emphasized when King George VI, then the Duke of York, has to assume the throne when his brother, David abdicated the throne because of his marriage to an American divorcee Wallis Simpson.

This too is a glaring example of a Monarch’s role in Britain that a King is also the head of the Church of England that marrying to a divorcee would be incompatible to his post. The King, although he does not rule, has an important role of being a figure of national identity, unity and pride. This was best emphasized when England has to get into war with Germany that the King has to make a speech that inspires and unites his people despite of his speech impediment. It caused the King anxiety knowing that he has a tremendous responsibility of uniting his people as England gets into war with Germany.

The Monarchy is also a source of national identity and a source of pride. The King has to act according to his role as a Monarch. This particular role of a Monarch has been a source of drama in the movie when Lionel had been insisting on his need for them to be equals during their sessions with him calling the King by his first name, Bertie. This resulted in much conflict between the two (though they ended very good friends for the rest of their lives) as this did not sit well with the King being a Monarch that he has to preserve the Royalty of the throne, which entails distance from the commoners.
