As the story progresses, Susanna became attached to Lisa who influenced her to cause trouble with the other patients. There was even a point where Susanna rejected the idea that she wasn't sick as what her boyfriend had told her because she relied much on Lisa. Susanna only came to realize how dangerous Lisa's personality was after Daisy killed herself and Lisa showed no mercy. Lisa even attacked Susanna and threatened to kill herself, too. At the end of the movie, Susanna was released from the institution.

She left a remarkable line "Crazy isn't about being broken, or swallowing a dark secret. It's you, or me, amplified.". According to a study conducted by World Health Organization (2010) depression, anxiety, psychological distress, sexual violence, domestic violence and escalating rates of substance use affect women to a greater extent than men across different countries and different settings. Furthermore, pressures created by their multiple roles, gender discrimination, and associated factors of poverty, hunger, malnutrition, overwork, domestic violence, and sexual abuse, combine to account for women's poor mental health.

There is a positive relationship between the frequency and severity of such social factors and the frequency and severity of mental health problems in women. Severe life events that cause a sense of loss, inferiority, humiliation, or entrapment can predict depression (WHO, 2010). In my opinion, women are generally more emotional and open in expressing what and how they feel. Therefore, this story focused on women as the subject. The following research findings mentioned in the last paragraph were strongly expressed in the movie.

Susanna was actually a strong young woman yet she was trapped in a diseased mind because of her external environment. She was deeply influenced by how other people see her and it made her thought that she was really insane. Lisa, on the other hand, refused any therapy and already accepted the fact that she was sick, and worst, dead. This was an implication of a patient who does not want to be treated and get well. There was a point in the movie where the viewers would actually misunderstand the psychiatrists as the antagonists.

It was like they were causing more mental distress to the patients rather than helping them found a stable mental state. However, we can conclude that the only one who can conquer our own fears and depression is we, ourselves. We can find solace from advice and therapy, but we can never escape depression or insanity if we do not know who we really are and if we do not have our own identity. The impact of external influences is quite strong. On the other hand, we must know what to adopt or accept and what to reject.

This does not only apply to women but to people in general. Everyone can have traumatic experiences or dark secrets that he/she has to overcome. A person is indeed normal if he/she knows her own weaknesses but knows how to handle them. We are more of a crazy person if will pretend to be not scared of anything and run away from those difficulties to escape. That is living in a world of lies and hypocrisies.
