Assignment 3 Name: Number: Course: Lecturer: Date: ASSIGNMENT 3: PROJECT Introduction Peru, a state in South America is famous for scenic features most preferred by tourists from all parts of the globe. It has many islands like Amantani, Isla Del Sol, Peruand Capachica among others. Earlier, communities living in Peru were more conservative and reserved to their cultures. At the advent of globalization and free market, majority of the Peru archipelagos opened up to tourist and visitors who started to bring new dimensions to culture and economy. The s of Peru are well known for hosting some of the world’s most indigenous communities who are more indebted to their culture than civilization. Tourists are now flocking the towns of Puno and Lima to engage in various activities. Tourists have given meaning to the Peru Taqulenos in their quest to earn and live better livelihoods. The aim of this project is to create an analytical perspective of taquile, Peru as a tourist destination of choice for all. It seeks to understand on features and cultural elements of the Peruvian people who provide unique attractions to Peru by looking into what attracts and excites people who visit or learn about the . Map of Peru Source: Wikipedia Natural features of Peru Peru located inside Lake Titicaca, is 35 Kilometers east of Puno. It is a very beautiful hilly highland with a narrow shaped characterized by its long and parenthesized shape. The major feature is a colonial prison used by the Spanish in the early 20th century. The Peru people themselves forms another major attraction as they possess a friendly touch with a culture of donning different clothes depending on their status. Their leaders put on caps (black Chullos), married wear red while single men and women puts on red and white. Their clothes reflect deep customs and beliefs. The highest peaks are extremely cold enough for cold weather hikers to have a great trip up the mountain. Lastly, the pre-Inca ruins sits on the highest end of Peru, are very attractive overlooking the stone agricultural terraces on the Peru. The place has textile and cooperative shops, restaurants and family rooms for night outs. The people of Peru Peru hosts about 3000 Quechua speaking people, who grow potatoes, barley and beans on terraced plots. Many were relying on fishing until they migrated to other areas of Peru in search of better livelihoods. The people in Peru who are mainly shy to strangers are accustomed to a popular indigenous culture in dress and festivities. They have a moral code that they should not lie, rob or become lazy. There are no dogs, police, vehicles and almost no state authorities. The people run the communities collectively to generate income for their members. They specialize in high quality hand-woven textiles and clothing which are highly regarded in Peru. Men are known for the famous hand knitting. The is controlled by the old people, who are sought to offer direction on what to eat, where to sleep and authority to bring pets like dogs and cats to the . The residents love visitors though they treat them with suspicion and caution due to their influential lifestyles. Their culture and beliefs comes first before anything they value. Thus, any deviant behavior will be treated harshly. The people there do not want any divorce or marrying anyone from outside the Peru. Severe consequences like being ostracized from the Peru are the welcome terms and conditions. Heritage Resources of Peru Peru was part of the old Inca Empire now known as Inca ruins. They surrendered to the Spanish domination of Peru during the Spanish conquest in the 15th century. The Spanish changed their traditional dressing to Spanish peasant clothing which they keep to date. They are famous for donning Andean garments like ponchos, mantles, coca-leaf purses and belts among others. Peru and its textile art have been named as the masterpieces of the oral and intangible heritage of humanity by UNESCO. The wildlife of Perucomprises of rams, guinea pigs, chicken and sheep. The arch of Peru which looks like a magnificent gate forms some of the important landmarks in the Peru archipelago. Some other landmarks are the gringo hall and the terraces which are the beautiful features overlooking the sea. The prison ruins are the first points any tourist visiting Peru would want to see. The ruins would immediately remind one of the Spanish conquest of Peru, Peru being the last of places. Peru as a Tourist destination Peru is a beautiful emerald gem on Lake Titicaca with shifting blue shades. The community is very important entity in the Peru as it works collectively. Peru is preferred by many tourists owing to its undisturbed culture and environment under which the Quenchua’s live. The place ahs beautiful sceneries including the greater view of Lake Titicaca, boat sailing and a touch will the local peoples culture. The tourists are hosted in family homes which are cheap as $3 per night though they have no running water and electricity. The homes serve home style dinners of soup, fried trout, white rice and fried potatoes. Other places like plazas lookout point serves crisp and tender fish. Peru has primitive and reserved fishing shores which are more natural with little or no human interference. Any tourist intending to visit would definitely find people Taquilenos started encouraging tourists from the 70s after years of isolation by developing community based cultural tourism. The people have responsibilities as well as rewards to every visitor to Peru. They have no hotels but visitors are greeted at the dock and assigned to families on rotation basis. The gringo trail has always generated enthusiasm for nature hikers and adventurers. Factors influencing tourist visit of Peru i) Motivation Desires, needs and intentions are intrinsic elements in people hence reasons for the choice of a tourist destination is largely unique to those who travel to such places. Their intentions may be known in the features and activities they would like to participate in at the destination. The desire to have a change of environment away from home informs the tourists visit outside their work and home spheres. The visitors from all parts of the world visit Peru to relax re-energize as well as learn from other people hence accommodating diversity of knowledge and understanding of other people’s cultures. The complexities of modern day lives like rush hours, high traffic, cranking and hooting of city vehicles are occasional forces that make many to seek more natural and undisturbed environs to self-rediscovery and reconnection with nature. It is no doubt that tourist would like to feel simplicity of the Taquilenos in the material and spiritual culture. They would like to watch the people perform and carry out their chores, perform festivals and rites. Historians would be mostly anxious to learn of how the Spanish conquest changed their mode of dressing but not their lifestyles which seemed to have connected with the original culture. Many tourists would be puzzled by the rigidity of the Peru people to globalization and modernity. ii) Pull factors The forces behind tourists droves to certain destinations is considered ‘pull’ factors which range from natural attractions, accessibility, serenity, affordability and reputation. Until the 70s Peru people were hostile to visitors but a visit by Belgian priest Pepe Loits and US Peace Corps worker Kevin Healy changed the perceptions of the people. Peru is a 12 hour ride by boat from Puno and is exciting for tourists who love boat sailing. Peru is largely in a natural state since the people have tried to close up their culture from external influence. Many tourists are attracted by elaborate and greatly sophisticated textiles, run by artisan stores. Many people over age of seven are increasingly getting engaged in handicraft. The prices of these handicrafts have been fixed. Tequilanos textiles can only be bought from Peru earning them good income. Housing at Peru is cheap $3 per night which is very encouraging, accommodation is arranged by families and the set-up looks more different from the outside world. iii) Push factors This entails the demographic, economic, technological and political forces that push the tourists to their preferred destinations. After the 70s many people began to move into Peru as a tourist destination. The had become well known among Mexicans, Irish and Americans who are moving away from the pressure of work back home to spend their time with other people and cultures. The tourists are those who have saved and earned surplus income to finance air and sea travels. The summer season is great opportunity for visitors to escape the summer sun and have a night outs of fun and adventure in Peru. Tourist activities at Taquile Tourists love sporting the floppy wool stocking cap commonly referred to as Chuyo while perched in the rear chewing a popular coca. The tourists are anxious to watch the community engage in handicrafts and basketry. The tourists engage in hiking of the rocky areas overlooking the petite stone harbor. Many tourists do visit Peru to get historical exposure of the s usually presented in the town. Impact of tourism in Peru The people of Peru have been able to consolidate tourist earnings with those of handicraft to improve their livelihoods. The residents increased their entrepreneurial spirit, greater organization in provision of tourist facilities like home stays, restaurants and aquatic transport. The people have had tremendous growth in their revenues from handicraft sales, sale of foodstuffs at the home stays and tourist earnings from boat sailing and travels within the . With overdependence on tourism, individualism is setting in increasing income inequalities among families. The tourism preferences has changed and many now prefer being closer to the main plaza to take advantage of restaurants and other services. Synthetic materials are slowly replacing sheep and alpaca wool in handicrafts. Simpler patterns and methods are being adopted to increase sales while litter is filling every part of Peru mainly pop and non-local food items. There is an apparent replacement of traditional straw thatching with corrugated roofs. Well, tourism is good for the local economy by meeting the ers needs. Local people many want tourists to visit in droves. However, guarding their customs from its influence is a major concern. Available accommodation to tourist When visitors arrive in Peru, they are assigned to families who have turned their homes into tourist units. The tourists are provided with food and sleep in these homes. Overnight guests are assigned to a host family at the moment they dock at the shore. Accommodations differ widely and in most cases lack running water and electricity. Most of the rooms are connected to homes which usually costs about 10 soles ($3) per night. Means of transport Tourists take a flight from Lima or other areas to Puno and alight for a boat ride. Many tourists get to Peru via 3hour boat ride of about 22 miles from the mainland of Puno. The highland has the highest elevation of 4000m in which tourists love hiking at high altitudes. There are no donkeys, handcarts, bicycles, motorbikes and cars in Peru. Trekking through footpaths is a common means of accessing several areas of the highland as there are no cars. The people are so used to walking on foot owing to the petite of few inhabitants. Tourists at the end of their tour will again board the boats to Puno and back to their countries. Gastronomical experience in Peru The Peruvian people love vegetable soup and fish due to their proximity to the lake and sea. The famous meal is the amazing trout which is a bowl of quinoa soup. There are a variety of dishes which includes pancakes with sugar, bread, eggs and cup of tea for breakfast. This is manly made of Muna or coca. The favorite lunch diet consists of vegetable soup; fish served with rice, tomato or onion salads. Amazingly, dinner comprises a nice vegetable soup and bread. Common among Peruvians, their cuisine is a favorite palate of best chefs worldwide. They have a good choice of fresh ingredients which are easily blended with immigrant traditions like African, Chinese, Spanish and Japanese to make it more lively and enjoyable.
